Hello, I am brand new to this forum. I have gotten lots of info about bunnies from other sites but want to join up here.

I rescued my bunny 4 weeks ago. Yes, I personally rescued her out of my parent's rose bush. My dad had noticed her cowering under the bush on Friday and she was still there Saturday when I did my laundry, so I went and told my husband she was going to die if we didn't rescue her. We went and got our pet carrier and lured her into it w/ some carrots. We then drove to the pet store and got a cage and supplies.

That monday I went to the vet's for a checkup. I told the vet I didn't know anything about rabbits, but she didn't tell me any info at all, didn't even discuss fleas even when I said I had cats; or any vaccinations--I had to look it up online to learn that none are required. So I felt it was a waste of $80 and an hour, but I learned my little Chestnut is a girl and is about 2-3 years old. She is most likely a Dutch rabbit.

We brought her inside and she is living in our office. She has her cage as her burrow and we built her a "play pen" out of wire shelving. She didn't like hay at first, only wanted to eat pellets, but she quickly learned that the pellets were being rationed. I don't want any fat lumbering rabbits! So she is eating 3 good handfuls of hay/day now (so proud) and 2 cups of veggies as well as 1/4 cup pellets.

My cute Chestnut litter trained herself! I noticed after 3 days she would urinate in only one spot so I got a plastic shoe box for $1 and cut the sides down so she could hop in and out easier. She contains all her droppings in it and I empty it twice a day at feeding time.

There is a draft in the office from the exterior door, so I splurged recently and bought Chestnut a fleecy cat bed. She loves stretching out in it and using the sides as a pillow. She is very cute and loves to chew up toilet paper rolls. I keep trying out different kinds of toys on her but she doesn't seem to know how to play with them. She took a while to get used to me, but allows me to pet her now. She is my first rabbit and my husband and I are officially "full" of pets! We have 4 cats and now the bunny, so that's it! We are moving the empty aquarium to the garage so I don't get tempted and get some fish too...

P.S. Don't reply and say that this cage is too small! She has free access to her "play pen" which is 4x bigger, so don't fret about it, please.

Silly me, I didn't introduce myself!

My name is C.J., I'm a graphic designer and work from home (so I can take care of everyone all day), my husband works two jobs: one as web director for a company and #2 as his own web design/graphic design business.

Like I said, we have 4 cats and 1 new bunny and no children yet. Married 2.5 years, live in a 3-bed house in Northwest Ohio.

See you around! I hope to take more pictures as we are most likely getting a new camera for christmas--our current one doesn't work reliably, that's why no current pics of Chestnut in the play pen...

Welcome to the forum :)

It sounds like you have done a brilliant job. I really hope this forum is useful to you and I look forward to seeing you around.

Your bun is beautiful, really gorgeous, and very lucky :)

Take care

Tracy

Welcome to the forum! Kudos to you for saving the poor bun! :great:

I looooove Dutchies. I have one permanent boy and a dutchy foster bun. They tend to be sweet goofballs, at least in my experience.

What general area do you live in? We like people to put at least their country in their profile, it helps us answer questions on food, available vet medicines, etc. Speaking of which, many vets don't have a clue about rabbits. They don't really cover them in vet school I'm guessing yours didn't know much so that's why she didn't tell you anything. I highly recommend looking for a good rabbit-savvy vet since they are so very different than cats and dogs. For example two common cat/dog meds, oral penicillan/amoxycillan and Frontline, are fatal for rabbits.

We do have a vet listing here. Maybe there's somebody near you?

What a wonderful story! Chesnut definitely found the right rose bush to hide under :) Do you have any idea where she might have come from? Did it seem like she'd been outside long, i.e. long nails, mites, etc.? She's socute!

AWESOME story and you are doing really well for not knowing about bunnies! She's adorable and seems to be settling right in! Did you find info all over the web?

Welcome to the forum :)

Thank you for your warm welcome! I am in Perryburg Ohio, USA (that's in North-west corner, by Toledo).

Yes, unfortunately, the vet I went to was the area specialist, I was recommended her by two other vet offices. I thought it odd too that she wasn't more helpful, especially since she loved Chestnut and said she had a black dutch also at one point. Oh, well. Chestnut is in good health. I insisted on a fecal exam, so she definately was not outside long enough for parasites. And it was too cool for fleas, fortunately.

My parents just moved into a retirement villa that borders the country and corn fields--so unless an elderly neighbor let her 3 yr old rabbit escape, Chestnut was dumped and left to fend for herself. I tried to contact the neighbors but no one knew anything about any bunnies...

Yes, I am spoiling her and loving it. As soon as I can I plan on buying some conduit stuff to wrap our cords so she can have free reign of the office. And I am trying out different veggies from a list to find her favorites. She loves (so far): carrots, green pepper, endive, mustard greens and collard greens as well as romaine lettuce. She didn't like the pea pods or pumpkin. And the clover sprouts were too messy.

See you on the forums!

Great Story!!! What you did was awesome!!! I'm in Ohio too :)
:dutch

Welcome to the forum! Chestnut is very cute. Do you know how the vet decided to estimate her age? I'm still confused about the possible age of a few of mine.

As for the cage, it is small, but nothing to worry about since she has a lot of time out of it. I have a similar one (doesnt appear so narrow, though) that I have an Xpen around. In a way I wish I hadn't bought the cage though, as pet taxis and wire crates are almost the same price and so roomy!
