Hey everyone,

I'm a few months late introducing my new puppy, so here she is. I got my new Japanese Akita Inu girl in July, her name is Ayame (or Ame for short). She was 15 weeks old when I picked her up. It was all very quick and I hadn't been planning another dog so soon, but I was offered Ame and she was just too good to miss! She comes from the best pure Japanese bloodlines available in Western Europe and her gorgeous daddy Taiyoo moved to Hungary after siring her litter so I had to have her. As you can see she is fantastic quality, I feel very lucky to have her!

Ame is now 6 months old. She's such a sweetheart, she loves cuddles and wants to give kisses all the time. Shehas thetypical Japanese import temperament, calm and confident, but no nonsense!

Ame went to her first show this month and did great, she has another in December and we're hoping to get her Crufts qualified for next year. Fingers crossed we can get Jiro there for 2011 too!

This was her on the day we brought her home.

way to cute dogs, I've always had a soft breed but, lots of people see them as vicious, due to what I belive to be bad ownership, what are your dogs temperements like?

Well, there are two breeds people think ofwhen they hear"Akita", the Akita (American Akita)which everyone knows and loves and these theJapanese Akita Inu which are rare in many countries. They used to be one breed but were split into two in every country besides the USA and Canda, by Japan's request over the last 10 years, which is where the confusion comes from, people still mistakenly call Akitas Japanese. Mine are Japanese Akita Inu with pure Japanese bloodlines.

As well as the physical differences, they also vary in temeperament, so I don'tfeel the Akita reputation is relevant to my breed, although people who don't know the difference might! The Japanese types are much more friendly and easy going in general. They are notas protective (which I believe is where the Akita is misunderstood and where the bad reputation comes from!). They are very soppy, love meeting people, ignore other dogs unless they know them. The Akita on the other hand is naturallyvery wary of strangers, a natural protector and often dominant with other dogs. The Akita is a fantastic dog, but as you say bad ownership has given them a bad reputation. I adore both breeds, my friend hasAkitas are we often walk our dogs together. I think the main problem is that people seriously underestimate how wary Akita's are of strangers and also how much socialisation they need as puppies. My friends Akitas live in a pack of 5 dogs with rescue dogs in and out all the time, people in and out all the time, and are 100% trustworthy as they have been very well socialised. It's not enough for an Akita just to go to puppy classes once a week, and some people don't even do that!

My three have fantastic temperaments, they love meeting people and being petted, Jiro and Kinu play with my baby cousins, Ame isn't allowed yet just in case, but in time I'm sure she will be just as gentle. They are great family dogs. They are not obviousguard dogs in the way the Akita or German Shepherd is, but they would step up and protect us if we needed them. They are all good with other dogs and cats, although I wouldn't trust them with rabbits! They are very quiet and quick to learn. I trust them completely!

Here is a video showing the difference between the Akita (American)and Akita Inu (Japanese) for those who don't know:

I am not sure my friend has one she is all white with blond ears and tail. She is not in the AKC standerds.

I love the shiba personalty very independent.

She tried to show her once and she was diqualifyed do to color. The breeder resently had a bitch drop a white but I dont want two dogs just one. Needless to say only one pup from that litter was show quality. The bitch is being retired also. She only gave one litter.

I have contacted her to say if she does not find a home for her to call me. Cause when she gets a pup like that she has a very hard time finding a home.

Who is going to pay for a dog that is not breed standard.

She is truely BEAUTIFUL Jenson! (Jiro and Ame are going to make gorgeous babies!) Pity the AKC doesn't recognise them. An incredibly beautiful, regal breed... (Are there any dedicated breeders in the US? I mean doing the Japanese Akita?)

I LOVE YOUR DOGS!
Can I please, steal them?
So will you be breeding Ame?
What category is she is right now? Baby Puppy Bitch? Junior Bitch? I'm so sorry for asking so much questions lol.
Your pack is GORGEOUS.

Goodness gracious...what an adorable picture

Thank you! Yes actually there are a good few dedicated breeders in the US, a kennel called Akasta in Texas is worth a look, they have some stunning dogs. The AKC actually voted again not long ago on whether to split the breeds, it was 51% said no, so hopefully by the next time it's reviewed it will be over turned. I think it's time for the AKC and CKC to catch up with the rest of the dog world personally!

Jess - they shed the whole coat twice a year, we get lost in a sea of dog hair for about two weeks, but the rest of the time they don't shed at all so they aren't much trouble!

Thanks! :biggrin2: Yes the future plan is to breed Ame and Jiro, pending health checks of course. But that obviously won't be for another 18 months. Ame is still in puppy at the moment, although sadly because there are so few JAI in the UK a lot of shows don't even have classes for the breed, they have to go into any variety!

AHH that's so cool!
I know for Golden Retrievers you have to check hip scores, elbow scores and eye etc what is it for JAI do you know?
If they go missing... It wasnt me.
