Hi my name is Miguel. My mommy got me from a friend. My neighbor, Ashen uses the litter box. But, I'm 5 years old, not neutered, and my mommy is frustrated because she put a litter box in my cage and I have used the restroom everywhere except in it. What should she do? She has considered fixing me but my age brings risks according to the vet. Any advice would be worth binkying for.

Is there any way we could keep the rabbit role play to the designated forum?

5 isn't too old to neuter, I think the increased risks would be negligible. If you'd still rather not neuter, you could switch to a wire-bottomed cage, and resign yourself to cleaning up after him when he's out.

Neuter for sure--5 isn't too old. Try placing hay in the pan or we have a manger at one end and a water bottle at the other end of their pans--works well for us. Also, if he's going in the same spot you can move the pan to that location.

My mommy hangs hay high above my litter box so I pee and poo while I eat my hay :) when I feel like being naughty I knock my hay down and pee of the side of my litter box. Mommy just hangs it back up and I go about my business. Ive still got all my man parts btw.

If you do decide to neuter, it could be worth getting blood check or whatever done first to make sure he doesn't have any underlying issues that may cause problems, but beyond that you should be fine. If your vet is experience with neutering rabbits, at 5 years it should all go well.

If your vet isn't comfortable neutering him simply because of his age (ie nothing in his medical history to suggest an increased risk) then I'd be wary of getting that vet to neuter him as that suggests a lack of experience on your vet's part.

We have a great library of rabbit-savvy vets here: http://www.rabbitsonline.net/f21/ - rabbit savvy vet listings, and this thread has listings of low-cost spay/neuter options for rabbits. Regardless of where you get him neutered, I definitely recommend getting preliminary bloodwork and such done to ensure he doesn't have any underlying health issues that could make the surgery riskier for him.

Assuming Ashen is fixed, getting Miguel neutered would make bonding them together an option... which is much more convenient than having to keep two rabbits separately (mind you, it takes as much as 6-8 weeks for a male's hormones to be completely gone after a neuter so you'd need to wait a while before trying to bond them.
