Hi. My name is Maria and I'm the proud mommy of Henry a 4 1/2 year old dwarf Hotot. I'm concerned about Henry's appetite recently. He's drinking 3x more than normal and his appetite has increased. Also, he's been urinating outside his litterbox and he's not as active.

Henry's diet consists of Timothy Pelletts, Timothy Hay, Bermuda Hay, Orchard Grass, and green leafy vegetables

I have an appointment with a specialist for next week but was wondering if anyone could shed some light on his condition because I am very concerned.

Thanks,
Maria

Hi Maria!

Any weight loss? Excessive urination? It could be something with the weather change. Excessive drinking and eating can be signs of diabetes, but you'd need a vet to take a test to see if he tests positive.

Here's a site you might want to look at regarding diabetes.

With the peeing otuside the litterbox, try soaking up the urine with a paper towel and putting it in the litterbox? Then clean the spot where his scent in with a vinegar/water mix to remove his scent.

Keep us posted about the visit with the specialist!

Sudden changes in eating or drinking behavior can sometimes indicate a health issue. Rabbits with bladder infections often start drinking excessively. As already mentioned, diabetes is also a concern (although not common in rabbits).

Because there are a number of illnesses that can cause changes in eating and drinking behavior, it's impossible to speculate over the internet as to the actual cause.

Hopefully, the vet will be able to determine what is going on with the little guy :)

Please keep us updated.

Pam

Thanks to all for responding. Henry hasn't lost any weight but is still eating, drinking and urinating excessively. He has an appointment with a specialist for next thursday and I will let you know how things turn out.

Henry and I appreciate your advice and concern!

Maria
