I have a 7 year old mini lop. I brought her to an exotics specialist reccomended by the House Rabbit Society on Saturday. She had runny eyes and gunk in her right ear. The vet said she had tooth decay (an abcessed tooth) that was infected, causing it to drain into her eustachian tube (thus the pus in her ear...was from the abcess draining). He said the pus was a good sign. The vet said she has a pasteurilla infection and gave her a shot of baytril and gave me baytril to bring home and give her every day. She has taken the baytril now on Sunday (she had the shot sat), and Monday night. Her runny eyes are MUCH better but her head tilt does not seem to have improved. She is eating fine, playing, doesn't seem to be in pain. She eats greedily and drinks plenty of water...other than her loss of balance and head tilt she seems healthy. I just hate seeing her so out of balance that I feel terribly!!! Does it take a few weeks for the Baytril to fully kick in? I know she may always have a slight head tilt but right now when I pick her up she loses her balance and rolls onto one side. When she is hopping around she is fine though...hops fine and doesn't fall over...just when her legs are not on the ground...that is when she loses her balance. I feel so bad for my poor bunny and I am WORRIED SICK! Any advice would be appreciated.

Is your vet looking at removing the infected tooth? Is it possible? That can help prevent reinfection, but I know surgery on jaw abscesses can be tricky.

It sounds to me like the Baytril is already working. But it can take a little bit longer for the head tilt and dizzyness to go away. Just be patient.:)

It actually sounds like she's doing really well. If she doesn't improve more within a couple weeks, or when the Baytril runs out, it would be a good idea to take her in to the vet again. Did he do a culture of the pus to make sure that Baytril is the correct antibiotic choice? Since she's improving then it probably is, but sometimes injectible bicillin or another antibiotic can do more, and you'd want to ask about that if she has a relapse or doesn't get much better.

Thanks so much! No he did not do a culture. If she gets worse or this reoccurs I will request one. He has not mentioned removing the tooth, thought he did say no more dried fruit or yogurt drops for the bun!

I do think she is doing well. I've read tat some buns stop eating etc. My bun is eating fine, pooping normally, peeing normally, attacking banana pieces when I give them to her as treats (she gobbles them up). I guess I'll just have to wait and see a bit with the head tilt. The vet did mention adding meclizine for dizziness....could be a possibility.

Thanks again!
