Everyone says I should be feeding my bun's hay but all I can get is lucerne and straw!?! Is anyone else having this problem? And where else could I get hay from!

If it's not available in pet shops try horse feed suppliers or farmers.

Fresh grass is the alternative to hay. If you don't have enough grass you could mix alfalfa (lucerne), straw and fresh grass and you might end up with something closer to the the right balance than feeding just one. Straw is very low in nutrients so would help balance out the higher protein in alfalfa.

Have you tried asking for oat hay?.....go to a fodder store and ask if they have any....

lucerne hay is very high in calcium which is not good for a bunny over six months of age.

My bunnies love oat hay

Yeah im going to ring around today. Im trying to find parks locally that haven't cut their grass yet so they can have lots of grass each day. All my buns and piggies are under 6 months at the moment. ONly problem with produce stores is I think most of them only will have the huge rolls which I wouldnt really have the storage for.

Other than Oat hay, what other hay's could i get?

We don't actually have a great deal of differen't hay's here...i know we have lucerne,clover...which are both very fattening for bunnies..wheat hay...i'm not sure if there are any others.

Oat hay is by far the best hay we have here though.

I'm In Perth. We have mainly Oat Hay which all Pet City stores should stock. Also available at Better Pets N Gardens and City Farmers. They normally cost $5-$7 for a gigantic rubbish bag size which lasts me for over a month. Don't know if you have these stores over your way though. Managed to get a bag of Timothy Hay from a pet supplier once but Sox hated it so much that I threw out the whole bag.

HTHs

Nup don't have any of those stores.. but honestly I don't really even think they are that fond of oat hay :( Ive bought a big bag of it and theres still a fair bit left at the end of each day..

I know you can buy hay on australian ebay...that's where I'm thinking of getting the oxbow pellets. It's pretty expensive though, like $29 for 1 or 2 kg of hay.

we get hay from better pets & gardens, but there's so many seedy bits, i spend ages picking them off the hay :p

Hey Katie just wondering.. is it oat hay that you buy for the bunnies?...when you say it has seed bits..that makes me think oat hay....well just to let you knowthey are just fine for bunnies if it is oat hay that you buy,i give my bunnies oat hay :)

oh ok thanks Cheryl! Im not sure but I think it's oat hay...it's hay & it's not lucerne.
I'm just worried that he'll choke on the seeds or get them stuck in his teeth...but i probably just worry too much :D
but if your bunnies are fine with them that's good, i won't worry so much anymore about seeds hehe. :bunnydance:

Yeah if its oat hay than your bunny will be just fine with it...actually the seed bits are the first to go with my buns :)

Hi Katie

Better Pets & Gardens, City Farmers and all Pet City stores in Perth (all the stores that I have visited so far anyway) only sells what I've been told is Oat Hay. You get a bag for about $5-7 and there are seeds attached to like green stalks of hay and the rest are stalks of creamy beige coloured hay. Comes in very long strands. Sox prefers the creamy beige hay in comparison to the green fresh looking ones (kinda weird I reckon). Sometimes she eats a whole heap of hay, other days she doesn't. Yeah the seeds are fine, well she hasn't gone spastic yet! :D:p I bought a gourmet packet of Lucerne for her which looked so fresh and smells beautiful and she hated it, paid so much for it from a rabbit specialist vet too! So now all she gets is oat hay and pellets. Guess each to their own eh!

Cheers, Carol :bunnydance:

Must be oat hay that we get aswell then!
Yeah we got a small sample bag of Lucerne hay from better pets and gardens, for my sisters guinea pig. Sweets wasn't too keen on it, and i've been reading it's got too much calcium for bunnies anyways...so I think we'll stick with oat hay. Maybe get some timothy hay one day.
Sox likes the beige hay, hehe, that's cute. Sweets likes it all, especially in his litter tray :)

Hi guys, I know this is an old thread but I was wondering if you found some hay in Wollongong? I live here too!

Lucerne is go good but thats all u can seem to buy. I was wondering if you found a solution because now I am having the exact same problem.

Woonona pet produce has rye grass hay in bails which is too big for me to get home.

Hope you found a solution and can help me out :)

Hi Rebecca, Poplar Pet Food and Produce at Kembla Grange sells oaten hay (which looks a bit yuk) and meadow hay. I got some meadow hay yesterday and I will try to get Rocky to eat it. Have you had any other luck with the hay?

Central Coast Vet has 2 location 1 in North Wyong and 1 oppening in North Gosford They sell oxbow hay which includes timothy, ochard grass and something else. I know oxbow is expensive but it is worth the money.
