What a week it's been. My little friend got spooked by the vacuum(which is a bit odd since I use it all the time) and somehow in his freakout broke his back left leg. Feel awful since it took me a day to notice. I was more concerned that he scared himself so bad he would get frightened to death and did not see it until handling him later.

Thankfully took him to a specialist vet and after a VERY costly couple of day he's back at home in a big old cast. The break was very bad and the vet could not line up the bones perfect so she's worried there may be complications. Fingers crossed for both my little man and my pocket-book! I don't think I could handle another large financial hit.

Looks like he's taking to it well which I've been told can be a bit of a concern. Interesting to see him try out what works and what does not in terms of mobility and postures. He's been frustrated once or twice but *by in large* his behavior is generally the same as it was pre-accident now that he's home.

Have to hand feed him meds for the next little bit which is interesting for me as I'm not a pro at handling him like I think a lot of you experts are! He's not pleased but first try went ok.

Just a really shocking event for me. I've had him for about 8-9 years with ZERO health issues and then all of a sudden for this to happen was just crazy.

I really wish I could know how and where the break happened. He just came tearing out of the shoebox he likes to hide in and ran into his pen running in circles over and over.

Kind of worried how he'll react to loud noises now every time I hear something but...I guess there's not much you can do really.

Anyone else have experience with this medical issue and possible tips?

Anyone know what I can do to prevent a repeat in the incident that caused it? I mean...golly I use the vacuum all the time and aside from an ear-raise or maybe quick jump into his *safe* corner he's NEVER done that before.

What a week...what a week....

I would just keep an eye on him. My bun is ok when I vacuum but he doesn't like it when I use the hose attachment. What I always do is to first start vacuuming which gives him a chance to realize what's going on and decide to go hide before I then use the hose.

If you're concerned about it happening again you could put her in another room, in a carrier, where she won't be as affected. We had a bunny freak out in her cage and broke her ankle, dislocating all her toes. We don't know what caused it either but we had to put her in a smaller, quiet area to heal. Surgery was not an option and no cast. If they gave you metacam be sure to keep using it as long as they say, since it will help with the pain.

It's funny you mention that as I was just starting to use the hose when it happened. I've basically decided to use the small hand-vacuum in the kitchen from now on. Again, it's still kind of weird since he's never shown much fear over it before but...I guess a fright is a fright for them.

He seems to be doing well. Not trying to get the cast off(yet).
