Hello, I just adopted my first bunny, Lucas (who is about 3.5 months old) from an animal shelter.

He is currently living outside at the moment in a hutch until I can provide him with a proper habitat within the house. I hope leaving him outside won't cause any harm to him due to the weather (I live in California BTW).

As this is my first time raising a bunny, it would be much appreciated if anyone is willing to provide any tips and pointers for me as I would like to do my best to provide my bunny with all his needs.

I still have not determined what breed he is and it would be much appreciated if an expert can tell me what breed he is as well, Thanks!

Hello, and welcome to RO! Lucas is a real cutie! And I like your hutch setup. As long as the hutch is shaded, he should be okay outside. If it gets really hot, you might need to give him a fan/mister, though. And I'd probably move the blanket a bit so air can come up from below. That way, if he gets hot, he can lay on the wire and get fresh air.

You could also bring that hutch inside, if you have room. With the door going to the ground, he could come and go as he wanted. Add an Xpen, and he'd have tons of room.

Thanks! I'll keep those in mind. I appreciate the help!

Hello again, I have a quick question. As of right now, I'm providing Lucas with an unlimited amount of Timothy hay. I was wondering if I should feed him pellets or anything else. If so, what do you suggest the serving amount to be and what would be the best pellet to feed him?

Welcometo Rabbits Online, my name is Dave and I am a moderator on the forum. So if I can be of any help please let me know. This is a terrific website for rabbits and their slaves, not only is it very active but also friendly. I am so glad you’re here and I know you will enjoy it.

Very nice hutch with a good looking bunny inside it!

I give my buns a combination of unlimited hay and pellets. Avoid any rabbit pelletswith seeds, corn or any colored pieces. Rabbits cannot digest corn, it can build in their stomachs and block the intestines.

Hopefuly, your bunny will never get sick,if you everhave a sick bunny, please post in The Infirmary and include your rabbit's age, breed and health history as well diet and output details leading up to the problem.

unlimited timothy hay! And make sure the bun doesnt get over heated. You can freeze a water bottle and place it in the hutch to provide a bit of AC for him :p

Pellets, unlimited hay and you can give him alfalfa till he's six months--it has more protein and calcium for a growing lad. You'll be able to start phasing in veggies in a couple of weeks too. Check the library for a list of veggies.
