My hubby and I just moved into our new home and in the mail yesterday I received a coupon, informational sheet and a business card from a vet hospital nearby. It says they see exotics, so I'm cautiously hopeful that they might be knowledgeable with rabbits. The past year I've had trouble finding, even among vets recommended for rabbits, one who is truly up to date with the latest in rabbit care. It would be great if one so close by actually turns out to be the best I've found so far. Fingers crossed!

i hope there is an exotic specialist,,but i feel as you do--,to not learn at the expense of the rabbit--been there done that,,..now i study lagamorphs/exotics-and i challenge the dvm,..and i flush them as fast as i can,,..a good dvm will have no problem answering any question,--so study up--,-and i start accessing from the word go,..-on one hand i can count the number of good -exotic-dvm,s--that i have met in the last 7 years,,---sincerely james waller:wink

I know that you will carefully interview them Krista. If you know more than they do (and I know that you are very knowledgable) then I'd worry, lol! Good luck. We are so fortunate to have such a great bunny vet here. They seem to be few are far between.

Maybe this article will help :)

If the hospital states it treats exotics then possibly they do treat rabbits but they still need to be screened.
A really knowledgeable vet will answer all questions gracefully because they are confident.

If the vet is hesitant or annoyed by your questions it often indicates a discomfort with them.

Congrats! I finally found one in KY too. He deals with a few different exotics but when he heard bunnies, he knew that i was his new client, not any of the other vets in the office. He answered all my questions and was able to read me and knew I was knowledgeable myself. :D didn't even throw my guy for a loop when I was using his termenology against him! (bad girl on my part, i confused a lot of the staff!) and he even recognized the breed,(velveteen Lop) so I was quite satisfied with him, not my prognosis on my vlop.
