I noticed that today Marina had a light yellow tinge to the area directly under her nose. Her nose is not running, wet, crusty, mattedor anything. Respiration is normal, however she did sneeze once yesterday and come to think of it once a couple days ago. Her front legs are clean, no indication that she has been wiping/rubbing away any discharge from her face. Eye's look great, eating/drinking playing (and pee peeing on my bed...eeeeee!)

I read up on the forum's library resources regarding pasturella and respiratory issues.... but I still don't know if the yellowed fur is a symptom/sign there is something going on....

Any thoughts/advice?

Thanks!!!!

Hmmm.... I just looked at Marina's nose again and it definately looks more yellow underneath than it did this morning. I'm going to take her into work with me tomorrow so Dr. Buonasera can take a look at her...

Rats! Merlin is supposed to get neutered tomorrow, but I don't know if thats going to happen now seeing as how if Marina does have an upper respiratory thing going on he will have been exposed.

:X

My poor girlie. I moved her out of my room and set her up in the living room. Merlin has already been exposed, but I don't want to make it worse.

UGH. Should I notify the breeder? Dont want any bun else to get sick.

Gabriel has exactly the same thing as what you are describing.

At times he will have a little yellowish tinge under his nose but never runny..and sometimes he won't have it.

When I took him to 2 vets (not that rabbit saavy)they felt it was not significant.
I know that I have read that pasturella can live in the sinuses and nasal cavities of normal buns and that the immune system usually keeps it in check.

Gabrielhas not been sneezing and this has gone on for a year without changing.
he was treated for stasis several times in this year and was given baytril as part of the stasis treatment so I thought that possibly I was killing 2 birds with one stone (pasturella and clostridium overgrowth.)

he lives by himself because he was not neutered for so long as i thought he had coccidia (probably) has mega-colon.

I have always been nervous about having him around my other rabbits because of the suggestion of pasturella. He is not bonded but lives upstairs with the rest of them and no one has ever caught anything from him.

I will be very interested as to how your vet deals with this. I don't think that you need to call the breeder until after the vet visit and I also don't see any reason to cancel the neuter unless the vet says so.

Believe it or not, your reply makes me feel LOADS better angieluv, lol. I thought maybe I was overreacting about moving Marina away from Merlin, but I'm just going to keep it this was until I find out whats going on. I'll just bring both kids with me to work tomorrow :)

I'll should probably request a culture be done , even if Dr. B doesn't thinkMarina needs meds...just to be sure?

sounds good..

Here in southwest Wi the vets can do certain procedures well and are clueless about other things.

One vet is very wary re. giving antibiotics without extreme need and the other one could not see the yellowish tinge the day I brought him in for the coccidia test.

One vet said that we could put him on baytril when he was neutered, however he didn't need it after he was neutered.

It never progressed to anything but always just seemed like it might

I brought Gabriel home from the shelter half dead from starvation and dehydration about a year ago. Someone found him in the baking heat on a driveway just sitting there.

If any rabbit was going to have problems I thought it would be him.
he does have a mega -colon condition and I have been concerned about him sitting in urine (doesn't barely use a box )but other than that he is OK.(fingers crossed) I did think that he possibly could have EC because of the urine thing but I have been observing him before I do anything.

I wouldn't be overly concerned aboutMarina because if it is something it hasn't progressed very far.

There have been people on this forum who have said their rabbits have yellow snot just pouring out of their noses and the rabbits are trying to wipe it off with their paws etc etc
Now that I would be concerned about big time.

Can't wait to find out what the vet says

Mochi sometimes gets that yellow colorright underneathher nose, but that comes and goes. Since people are saying that when their immune systems are down, they tend to get URT infections. I was wondering, in what ways can we boost our rabbit's immune system?

For humans we take Vit. C and eat lots of greens. For rabbits, are there vitamin supplements that help with their immune systems?

this link is from our health section..alot of the info from Kathy Smith's book Rabbit health in the 21st Century"

Since this question came up I am going to read this section myself. According to kathy Smith certain herbs and plants are beneficial to immune system health.

I have taken echinacea and astralagus myself but never given to my rabbit.

it's worth reding and thinking about but must be done with caution and knowledge

I don't do anything herbal or alternative with my rabbits but try to give them a very stress free environment, plenty of very good hay mixes, varied greens and clean water and exercise....and lots of company with me and my other rabbits

Well I looked at Marina this morning and didn't see any yellow (figures) and with Having Merlin's neutered scheduled today I thought I'd wait to take Marina tomorrow. Turns out Dr. B over booked herself with surgeries so Merlin being the empolyee pet got the boot till Wednesday.:X

I'm still planning on keeping the appointment for tomorrow for Marina... Will let you know what Dr. B thinks. She's a smart woman, but not a rabbit "specialist" She sees a couple bunnies regularly (haha, mostly mine). I do take my buns to FVS in Tampawere there is a specialist there. I may decide to take Marina there if Dr. B isn't quite sure what to make of Marina's coming and going yellowy nose.

Will keep you posted:biggrin2:

After much thought, I decided not to take Marina to work to see Dr. B. I described her symptom (the yellow under the nose) and DR. B does not want to be giving her AB's just for this reason. If I see ANY worsening her symptoms I am planning to take her to the specialist in Tampa.

I must keep her and Merlin seperate for at least 3 months or more anyways, so I might as well isolate her so that if she does have something, I will be limiting Merlin's exposure.

Thanks for all your help and advice everyone.

Kayleigh-

Sorry that this is a little off topic, but if I may ask, where do you work? I am also in St. Pete and very interested in vet science. I was looking into volunteering at an animal hospital/vet's office and was just wondering where you are...

Thanks! :)
