I am waiting for our vets to ring me but im terrified.
my 7 and a half years old rescue girlie has had a few bouts of cystitis with some bleeding. The day before yesterday her partner had ripped off a toenail. we thought that was the blood source. both seemed clear of blood...The dirty litter tray had a few small clots too.
Late last night i was cleaning them out and noticed more obviously fresh blood on bedding and on hay in tray on top of their poops. And some largeish clots. picked them out to examine them...he was fine but she was all blood stained fresh too. she has had a few nasty bouts of cystitis with blood drops but nothing like this.
I asked the vet could they tell where the blood was coming from...bladder or vagina or rectal.....he said no there was no test for that. Sincethe first bout..the more rabbit savvy vets there haveasked me if she had ever been spayed. she is a rescue rabbit and the people who handed her over said that she had been spayed.
But now it looks like maybe they lied.
Last night the litter tray the vet bedding..the corner of the cage....got blood..not drops but blood. i checked her partner as he had ripped a nail off and we thought it was him.
lifted her out andshe was covered in blood around her bladder etc and clots.
got her to our vets but one of the less bunny savvy ones there....examining her on the table blood pooled and massive dark clots the size of a big soft bunny poop fell out. Since the first bout august 2017 it was cystitis...that was how it was treated....but my first thought was typical uterine cancer symptom..head vet agreed and there is no way of telling unless they open her up. Last night the vet said her bladder was empty....kidneys felt ok. but he was concerned about not normal behind her kidneys. If this is vaginal its obviously uterine/ovarian cancer.
I asked could it be a bladder stone...no or blood couldnt flow like that. he said her bladder was empty and her kidneys felt fine. she is vaccinated against rvhd2 and was due to have the rvhd1 and myxi vaccine....so i panicked but have to put on brave face for my adult disabled basically bed bound daughter who also has severe anxiety and stress and possible ptsd.
my mum died of vaginal cancer that was always put down to bladder infection....bleeding as bad as a heavy period sometimes. docs misdiagnosed it was a slow growing cancer with good recovery rate....she didnt even get to live a year after remission. They told my mum it was cystitis....everytime as she had bladder issues...no way of testing it.
i saw on a thread here how a bunnys bleeding was tested to see if it was bladder/vaginal/rectal.
why do our vets say there is no way....just like my mum.....
The vet said he could feel something a bit odd behind her kidneys but couldn't say what. He said they will x ray her for stones...in case....but he is convinced she had not been spayed and the mass of blood and clots is textbook uterine cancer.
I know the vets wont be doing rounds till after clinic this morning...so i sit be the phone terrified she has died overnight. It has made me think every rescue bun i get in the future will have to be male or actually spayed by the rescue. so sad.
any others experience this?

I’m so sorry for you, must be really scary for you! You’ve done the right thing taking her to a vet. Have they ultrasounded at all? Can learn a lot from an ultrasound, and might help them determine if she still has a uterus, and what it is they are feeling near the kidney. I have all my fingers and toes crossed for you, please keep us updated.

Thank you. yes the vets have just rung me to say the copious bleeding and huge clots seems to have become bloodstained urine. They are going to xray her and try to ultrasound her too. ultrasounds is done awake but movement...gas in the gi tract causes distortion. I asked about telling where it was coming from blood test...he said it appears to be coming from her vulva....but could be both. tumours seem to be most expected....i hope its just a bladder flush needed...stick my head in the sand......

I'm so sorry for you. Hope nothing too serious is wrong and that it can be easily fixed.

Thank you....sadly it is an uterine mass....obviously cancer and it may have spread. We have bought her home to spend all tomorrow spoiling and saying goodbye. We have said yes to having it removed and if it has spread or inoperable then they will let her go under the anaesthetic.
She is a rescue bun as most of my bunnies have been. The rescue said she was spayed as that is what the owners said. If only they had told the truth...i would have paid the rescue to do it or our vets. It is not fair.....i would normally just have her put to sleep and not open her up. But there is a chance it would be able to save her and stopping the bleeding and cancer so we have decided to give her a chance. If they have to let her go then so be it...at least there was a chance.
She had a very strong painkiller called vetergesic before coming home and it zonked her out. she has not moved to eat and drink just asleep in litter tray. her hubby is disturbed and i am terrified she may have died.
The amount of blood she has lost is awful....huge clots too. i tok their vet fleece out of their cage and cried at the amount of blood soaked in it.
No more rescue bunnies unless it is the rescue who have girl bunny spayed....i wish there was a way to tell.
15months she started this blood in urine and my first thought and the senior vet was uterine cancer but because the rescue said she was spayed we did not push it...she has had 3 episodes of blood in urine...cystitis. now we know it was uterine cancer. we could have had her operated on then, but she was supposed to be spayed. she has lost a lot of blood...if she goes during op she would not have to recover only to be put to sleep. We are heartbroken and so angry...not with the rescue...with the liars who handed her over.
The only way to tell if she was spayed is to operate..Laparoscopy. But recovery is very limited on top of anaesthetic!! now i am agreeing to opening her up when i know i should just have had her put to sleep...but she could make it and have another 2 years with us. Fate usually takes a hand ....and now i cannot see her in her cage..her hubby is at the other end of the cage and he looks terrified....seen that on remaining bunnies too many times.
online it mentions giving your bunny a blood transfusion before the op but our vets go huh?
if i could get her to specialist i would but it is such a long journey for a bunny in her state. And if they cannot fit her in or our vets dont refer....
if only a blood test could reveal whether they were spayed.......
Wild rabbits do not get it they say as their life span is so short...the risk of uterine cancer increases with age so there is not the risk that there is in pet rabbits.

I’m so sorry for you, I would be angry too. You’ve done all the right things, it’s just bad luck :( good luck to you, I’ll be thinking of her, keep us updated x
