Hi...

My parents found a beautiful, blue baby rabbit in their garden. Since they know nothing about rabbits, and none of the neighbors knew where he could have come from, they called me.

He must have been only about 4 weeks old, maybe.

The little guy did great last night and all day today, I fed him 10ml of goat milk last night and he ate hay and pellets today, he was drinking, pooping and peeing fine.

A few hours ago I noticed he had less energy, but i figured he was just tired from all the hopping around, so i put him away to is temporary setup.

Next time I went to check on him he was weak, had difficulty standing. just a few minutes later he started throwing his head back an moving his front legs frantically. he pushed with his back legs a few times too.

By the time I got a vet on the phone, about half and hour after I first notice he was really sick, he was just too far gone. He could no longer stand at all, his mouth was open when he was throwing his head back.

When we got in the car he started squealing in pain, and a couple streets later i felt him go limp. His heart was still beating but he was gone. He died soon after. I called the vet and he said he probably just died because of being so young... he wasn't a specialist, but he was the only onw I could reach at this hour.

I had never had a rabbit die in my hands, it was so sad,...

All I could do was keep him warm n my hands, I hope that made him feel better in his last minutes.

Do you guys have any idea what could have happened? Does it sound like poisoning? there may have been rat poison left over in my parents garden. Or maybe some type of injury? Starvation? although he was eating fine he was very thin. I can't stop thinking about him... Any input will be appreciated.

I have a video but it's too awful and sad...

i am so sorry! that is exactly the way my babies passed after getting into mouse poison that i had put out years before i had my bunnies. i dont know how they pass when there are other causes but everything you descibed in this bunnies passing brought tears to my eyes because it was the exact way both of mine had passed. they went from perfectly fine to horrible in no time at all. both had their heads thrown back moving their front legs fantically and pushing with the back legs. like i said i have no experiance with the symptoms of other causes of passing, but i know that they pass that way with poison

Omg I don't know what it could have been but I just wanted to say how sorry I am you went through that. How traumatic! You did everything you could and you gave what comfort you could til the end for the baby.

So sorry for your loss. Without a necropsy it's hard to pin down as you know nothing about him. Rest in peace little man.

Agree.

So sorry for your loss. You did everything you could and was there for this little one when he passed. Rest in peace little one.

K:(

Thank you all for your words, and sorry for not replying before.

The day after this happened, my older rabbit was attacked by my neighbor's dogs, and died a day after. So I hadn't been in a very happy rabbity place. We miss him like crazy =(

My husband brought another rabbit last night, but no one can replace my Neppy

So sorry for your 2nd loss. People need to control their dogs if they aren't friendly or trained. They are a danger to other animals, children, & adults, too.

Sadly there seems to be no way to tell this way of death falls under many things its just the way they die guess. Just lost a baby 2 days ago and the death was similar she was fine then 30 minutes later dead and it played out about the same thrashing, crying out, couldn't get up. He was caged inside so no chance of poison and the vet suspects heart/nervouse system failure like stroke or aneurysm ... my other rabbits who were caged together checked out fine so nothing contagious. Sorry for your loss and i know it seemed awful but there's no telling why
