So I had a little problem with my newest lionhead Ricky and took him to the vet that charged me 120 dollars for 10 minutes and some eyedrops ( and not even a thorough exam ) before I saw the bill I had the vet give me estimates on spay and neuter. He quoted me 380 dollars for female and 260 dollars for male. This is absolutely rediculous to me! I live in the mid-west in a farming community where 4H ( don't even get me started ) is everywhere and my rabbits are exotic animals??

This can't be normal? I thought maybe 75 dollars each was reasonable so am I that out of touch with the costs of things?

What did you pay?

Thanks for any help

I have seen in run from $75 to $350 for a neuter. For a spay $90-$400. Rabbits are exotic because in order for a vet to know more than the basics they have to choose to further their studies when it comes to rabbits. Call around and get more prices. Also look for rescues and shelters in your area they may know something cheaper.

I just had my Flemish Giant Rabbit spay this past Monday. It cost $164 which included the surgery, pain medication, and a follow up visit the next day with additonal meds because she would not eat afterwards. I took her to an exoctics specialist which I recommend since this procedure was difficult on her. We live in Nashville, TN.

Both of my rabbits we adopted already fixed, but in terms of finding a cheaper option, try calling local rabbit rescues or shelters and ask what vet they use. Oftentimes they've chosen a cheaper vet, but they'll have lots of experience if they do all the animals for the rescue.
It does require additional training on the vet's part to learn to do a rabbit spay/neuter and hey, vet school is expensive.

my males are 48.00 and females 58.00 ,,15.00 extra for pain meds....i shopped and shopped ...my first bunny i paid 350.00 at an exotic animal clinic and she ended up dying during the surgery...the cheap prices i get now are from the spay and neuter clinic i new they were a chop shop but i found out thru a local rescue (like everybody is advising above)that a rabbit savvy vet was working there now...keep shopping u will find cheaper.:)

Also, check with the Humane society for a low-cost spay/neuter program. We got Benjamin done at the vet school here for about $200-250, but the Humane Society has a program that's only $100 for spay or neuter.

The price that was quoted to you is about right for an exotic vet. Hershey's neuter costs $200 including a checkup before hand.

But like everyone said, call around. I know a rescue near here gets it down MUCH cheaper!
