Just needing a bit of advice ...

My rabbit, Mushrooms, has suddenly developed flaky skin justbelow his neck and on his back. I noticed he had mites\fleas and gavehim 'Spot-On' treatment for it - which has always worked and has nevercaused any problems. This cleared up the nasties, but left Mushroomswith white flaky skin ...

Anyone else heard of anything like this? Or have any ideas?

Mushrooms is acting normal in every way, happily eating anddrinking, I'm just a little concerned. Any tips would help? :)

Hi Sophie, welcome to the forum :),

Flaky skin as you probably know is usually a sign of mites, could it bethe final after effects of having them? Did he get treated tokill all stages of the mite cycle or is it possible he still has them?

Otherwise could he be allergic to the spot on treatment if the flaky skin is just where you applied it?

Failing that I don't know but best of luck with a solution :).

Kate

You might want to have a vet to a culture of theproblem skin. If the vet still sees mites under the scope you mightneed ivermectin injection treatments.

Hi Sophie,

Wonder if the treatment you're giving is not getting all the mites or fleas as new ones hatch.

At least three ivermectin pea-sized amount on the forepaws where theycan lick it off at 7 to 10 day intervals three times would help clearof any bugs. It's important to finish the course of treatmenteven if the condition seems to have disappeared. Although ivermectinisn't licensed for use in rabbits, it has been widely used for a numberof years without any reported problems. That said, you would want to check with your vet to be sure it's okay.

Please see a post by Buck Jones just posted whereas his rabbit had areaction to Ivermectin. Luckily, the Ivermectin that Buckused was expired, so it was less potent, but you should at least beaware of his story as 9 out of 10 rabbits seem to do okay withIvermectin, but you have to be careful.http://rabbitsonline.net/view_topic.php?id=5851&forum_id=1

What breed of rabbit is Mushroom?

If it's fleas and it's on the back of her neck, youcoulduseKitten Flea Powder as another way to treat it.

If it is dry skin, there is an oatmeal shampoo that is made forrabbits.Should you decide to go that route, thewater should be lukewarm and best not to get the rabbit's head wet atall. Youhave to be careful when bathing the littleone because theyare verysensitive when it comestohot/coldchanges. Although I don'tnormally say shampoo them, if the problem persists, it's an option.

Thanks Carolyn!

(Mushrooms is a lionhead, btw)

I'm possibly beginning to think that perhaps the "Spot-On"treatment that I gave him, is perhaps not getting rid of all of thefleas\mites in every stage of their cycle and that I should try itagain - I know he's not allergic to it, because I've used it everymonth or so with no side effects until now.

I'll give the kitten flea powder a try and if things don't clear up I'll be straight off to the vets with him.

Thank you all for the quick replies and help!

It's much appreciated :)
