Hello everyone

I just switched over my bunnys litter from Care Fresh to wood stove pellets.
I switched because care fresh isn't cutting it!

The next morning i come in (after the switch), he's pooped everywhere but the litter box basically. Does this mean he hates it or is there something else wrong?

Usually, when you switch litters, you want to start by mixing the old and new litter, and slowly increase the ratio of new litter until you're only using new litter. You may have confused him.

Some rabbits adapt from one litter to the next seamlessly (my rescue bunny went from shredded paper at the shelter to wood pellets here without a hitch); others, not so much.

As zombiesue said, a gradual transition often solves the problem if your rabbit is resistant to a sudden change in litter box substrate. Another tactic is to eliminate the variable completely by putting a grid in the litter box - that way, waste falls through but the bunny never stands on the litter (also useful for rabbits with long fur that substrate tends to stick to and for "diggers").

http://rabbitsonline.net/view_topic.php?id=53690&forum_id=93 - this thread shows a great litter box system; even if you don't want to build the whole thing, you can just make the grid part (check 1/3 of the way down the first page for grid instructions).

You can try putting a layer of hay over the litter. Some rabbits don't like the rough feel of the pelleted litter on their feet. The layer of hay makes it softer and more comfortable for them.

I use horse stall pellets with a thin layer of kiln dried pine shavings over the top. I do this to provide comfort to the buns feet as well as to cut down on the litter being tracked through the cage.

You could try simply putting any poops outside the litter box into the litter box and see if that gets him going in it. I never had a problem with switching litter though so I'm not sure if that would work.

My buns took to the wood stove pellets great. Tho kody refuses to poop in his box. It's annoying I went as far as buying a HUGE litter box but he still doesn't use it. lol ImageUploadedByRabbit Forum1388620669.087267.jpg

I second the hay layer on top of the pellets. I did this to get my buns used to the pellets because they wouldn't jump onto them at first. Worked like a charm!
