    Merlit was my Flemish giant

Merlit was my Flemish giant. She usually thunders down from the shelves of her hutch when I come with breakfast, but yesterday morning she just sat there, breathing heavily. The vet said she had a mild respiratory infection, and gas. She ate all her medicine for the vet, and all her...

    Optimal temperature for a bun?

Hello, I just moved to a new place. Previously, I lived in an apartment and the bunny hutch was in the living room. It stayed at room temperature. I just moved into a place where the bunnies (two adult Flemish giants) have their own room, which is great, but it's unheated. The bunnies are now...

    Digestive tract obstruction

We keep a squirt gun handy, and squirt them when they chew on things they aren't supposed to.

    Digestive tract obstruction

Hello, Chud seems to be doing well. His appetite looks normal, and he runs around and jumps. We were given Laxatone and Simethicone by the vet, and told to administer it twice a day for three days, or until Chud gets his appetite back. We're making the following changes based on the advice...

    Digestive tract obstruction

We switched them off of alfalfa pellets about a year ago; right now we're feeding them Oxbow Timothy pellets. We used to feed them Kay-Tee Timothy pellets, but Oxbow is cheaper since I can order 50lb bags, and comes just as highly reccomended.

    Digestive tract obstruction

One of the veterenarians at Eastern Exotic Veterenary Clinic, in northern Virginia. Yes. Girlfriend was given a sample of something she pronounced as "Laxatone" to take home. It was not transmitted telepathically, or implied through subtle changes in body language. So far, the opinion of...

    Digestive tract obstruction

Another brief update: Vet says that Chud is eating food on his own, pooping, and is "bright". If his condition continues to improve, he'll come home in about two hours. We're planning some changes in diet for our rabbits, and I'd like to ask some questions: I've heard that it's good policy...

    Digestive tract obstruction

another brief update: The vet has elected to stop periodic xrays, since the abnormality on them is showing a trend of improvement. We are to wait for a call if anything unexpected happens, but no news is good news.

    Digestive tract obstruction

    Digestive tract obstruction

Here is what I have learned since I last posted: On PubMed I found "Gastric dilation and intestinal obstruction in 76 rabbits.", which was published by The Veterenary Record in 2007. Here is the abstract: " Eighty-four incidents of gastric dilation (bloat) were investigated in 76 pet rabbits...

    Digestive tract obstruction

I only know the numbers they gave me. I can extrapolate two pieces of information: 1.) They're probably making up the estimates on the spot. I doubt that they've read a technical article where it has been accurately derived. 2.) %2 chance of survival came up twice. Once when I asked how often...

    Digestive tract obstruction

Hello, Chud, the male of a brother and sister pair we've had for just over a year, was breathing heavily and acting funny. My girlfriend noticed this, because I'm presently visiting family. She took him to the vet and an X-ray revealed an obstruction. The vet is caring for him now. We have...

Rabbits seem to have eaten foam

Update: Bunnies appear to be operating within established tolerances. Poo production has been measured and found to be meeting the quotas of the Five Year Plan. Bananna and strawberry rations have been cut due to setbacks on the Malabar Coast.

Rabbits seem to have eaten foam

Updates: I came home on my lunch hour and offeed the bunnies treats. One ate half a strawberry, the other ate a piece of bananna (no leftovers). I just came home and offered more treats. They both horfed down chunks of bananna. I'm sure they love being tested like this. How long should I...
