I'm not 100% sure on this, but I think I read somewhere that the harm from pine / cedar bedding comes from when it reacts to their urine. Perhaps this would explain why some say chewing on the wood toys is ok? I haven't heard anything one way or the other about hickory.

I don't use bedding over the whole floor either. I use Carefresh bedding in the litter box, and nothing on the rest of the floor (which is solid plastic). Unless of course they decide to spill hay from the dispenser or dump out their litter box everywhere :P If you want to put something over...
