So today Thumper and Peaches have spent a lot of time together and they were doing so well. They were snuggled up in the litter box for quite some time, taking turns grooming. Then...

He went BALLISTIC trying to mount her! I mean at first she tried to ignore it then she tried to run away but he was like this for like 3 hrs...of course I separated them so that it wouldn't turn into an all out brawl, which it didn't. Then she just got agitated and started nipping him. The good thing is that she wasn't trying to kill him! In fact, she would lay next to him when he calmed down and then put him in his place when he started again.

What do you think got into him? Is this normal? He's never been like this before.

They are still trying to sort out their standing with each other from the sounds of it.

He wants to be dominant, and shows that by humping, she wants to be dominant and shows that by nipping. Maybe take the bonding back a bit to a slightly less amount of time at a time of day when they would normally be asleep (mid afternoon, or mid morning might be best) so they are not hyper active.
