My rabbit book sayswhen a doe breeds that if she ovulates and the eggs are not fertlized they go sterile, but it does not say for how long.

Just a question I wanted to add to my "Rabbit Information" folder in my brain. It suprizes me how much I seem to know compared to breeders around here and it makes me want to learn more ;)

The doe isn't actually considered "sterile", the eggs are just not viable after a certain period of time.

Ovulation occurs 10 hours after breeding, and the eggs are only viable for 6-8 hours. After mating, the sperm mature (a process called capacitation), and are ready to fertilize the eggs as the eggs are reaching the oviduct. Therabbit spermcan live forabout 30hours.

It is recommended that subsequent breedings are done within an hour's time, or the eggs will have died by the time sperm from later breeders are ready to fertilize the eggs.
