soft poops or mild-(cecal-dysbiosis),,treatment turned ugly-a daily butt bath ,due to a small amount of soft poop, gatheredabout the tail.//.to avoid fly strike, which would compound the problem.//--.when during the cleaning some fur fell out/above the tail area,,and had been suddenly chewing on her rear legs,,oh-dear-major-problem--exotic specialist took cultures for possible coccidiosis and ring worm,,2ml of sulfadime every 12 hours and thermazene ointment for the bare spots...the probioc-(probios) i have her on i need information about,,supposed to contain live(viable) naturally occuring micro-organisms---what i need to know if anyone uses this stuff and are there any tests i can be refered to for analysis for live bacteria---or in plain languge is this stuff junk.??...sincerely james waller--:rose::bunnydance::?:biggrin2::p

I have used Probiosbut more frequently Benebac.. I think it is useful.. it has helped my rabbits in the past when they have GI upsets.
I would continue to use it.

Always check the tube, however , for the expiration date.I have heard of bad batches of benebac.

I hope your bunny improves , James

I too believe in Probios and Benebac. They contain the same microorganisms. The thing is that the bacteria themselves don't survive long in the body, but they make the ingested food that's passing through the gut more acidic, which helps out the bacteria farther down the line, so to say. So, if you look at the literature talking about the microorganisms in the GI tract of a healthy rabbit, you won't find evidence that the ones in Probios or BeneBac are in the healthy rabbit GI. That's why the important thing isn't exactly which microorganisms you put in there, but that they are acid-producing microorganisms. Things like lactobacillus (lacto=lactic acid) will make acid in the gut and decrease the pH.

thank you for your replys ..would it be appropriate to say,,when giving oral antibiotics,,probios can be considered a good enhancer of gut flora as seen by the type,or amount of poops.??.what proof do we have that probios works>??.some doubt has been thrown at probios,s usefulness,,so i am merely trying to defend it,,..sincerely james waller,,:rose::bunnydance::?:p

I actually have read articles that stated that the probiotics were not actually useful but they always seems to help my rabbits who either were gasy or in stasis.

Ihave administered probiotic when antibiotics were given orally but have no proof that it helped the rabbit other than the fact thatI have never had a rabbit with a serious gutdisturbance from taking antibiotics
I just ran across this article ( first timeI saw it) . Lactobacillus casei is in both benebac and Probios so this little study showed some positive effects.

I too haven't seen any evidence regarding probiotics other than my own experience. It seems to be out there, like angieluv found.
