Hi everyone,

One of my otter mini rex rabbits died yesterday from an unknown cause :( I don't want my other mini rex to get lonely, so I was wondering if a 5 month old rabbit would live with a baby doe??

I'm so sorry your bunny died.... :( Binky free little one... :rainbow:

I guess the 'pairing' would depend on several things:

How old is the baby doe? It it's too young or small, personally I'd worry about it being squashed, in case of any squabbles or anything... maybe someone else with more experience can answer?!

The 5 month old, is it a boy or girl, and is it spayed/neutered? Otherwise that could be a problem for obvious reasons!

And also, you'd need to introduce them gradually, instead of just putting them in together, and do supervised bonding sessions on neutral territory, to make sure that they get along ok, especially if one is so little!

Hopefully someone else will come along soon and give more experienced answers (or maybe they have while I was typing this lol...)

Edit: Oh, and if it was an unknown cause, you might want to get the older rabbit checked out by a vet first, in case it was something that the bunny has passed on to it, that could get passed on to your baby doe....

My doe is 5 months old and not spayed. Baby doe will be a rescue and a couple of months old.

I have another pair of rabbits which we had to pair up gradually.

I have kept lots ofguinea pigs all my life as I breed them in Silver and GoldenAgoutiand I have always have had a fewpet rabbits as well. (Not together of course before anyone asks!)

In my opinion, I wouldn't bring another rabbit into the household if you don't know what caused your rabbit to die (R.I.P. little one:pink iris:). Why not pair up your one Mini Rex doe with another one of your rabbits?

Also, are you able to take the one who died to have a necropsy performed and see what the cause of death was?

Ah, a couple of months old isn't as young as I was thinking... that might be ok. And if the other doe is definately a doe, then that might be ok too...

The illness does concern me though, like Emily said. I would be VERY sure that it's not something that could be passed onto other rabbits before you pair the older doe with another... A visit to the vet to check-up the older doe at least maybe...

I guess if you still really wanted to rescue the baby, you could keep her completely separate for now, in a different room/hutch, and then when you are sure, you can start to pair them together once you know that the baby can't get ill...

No all my others are happily paired up. I have buried the one that died, I couldn't have that done anyway.

I am sorry about your loss. I would have the other checked up before you make any decissions. Just in case. Than adopting would be a great idea once you are sure she is ok.
