4 days old photo shoot! :)

I was thinking broken tort for bunny number 2 too. If you look at where the darker colour is located it is all in the same areas that would be shaded if it was a solid tort. Super cute though!

    Bunny biting new owner

I actually decided after this recent incident that an info sheet is going home with every new (pet) bunny I sell from now on! Most of the people who buy pet bunnies are kids and they can't help but be excited about their new family member and want to handle it as much as possible - I agree that...

    Bunny biting new owner

I sold a mini rex last week to a young girl as a pet. He is just over 1 yr and has been handled by me and a few others since he was born (I bred him myself) He has never shown ANY aggression towards me. I got an email from the new owner who says he has been trying to bite her. Now I might be...

Is this a "Summer of the Buck"?

Lol - I have had a summer of does! Two litters so far, 4 does and 3 bucks in one and 3 does, 1 buck in the other. Waiting on litter number 3 - due today so won't be able to tell sex on them for a little while yet. On a slightly different note - I read somewhere once that temperature when kits...

    breeding a booted mini rex?

Thanks guys! I'm getting pretty attached to one of the booted babies - she has such a sweet temperament as well that if she turns out as nice as I think she will she'll be a great addition to my herd!

    breeding a booted mini rex?

Would you use a booted mini rex as a brood doe if it was of exceptional type? I have a litter out of a black otter doe (the dad is a broken chocolate with almost perfect 50/50 colour.) In this litter I have 1 black otter, 1 black, 2 booted blacks and 2 booted black otters. None of the babies...

    Castor mini rex colour question.

I realize that certain colour crosses are better for producing showable colours. What I am interested in is the genetics behind those reasons! I do not show at the moment as there are no shows anywhere close enough for me to go to. I do have a healthy market for pets. My main interest is...

    Castor mini rex colour question.

Why would a castor/otter cross produce weird looking or unshowable otters? The only way an otter would be produced in that cross would be if the castor parent threw a recessive at or a gene right? I did get one otter in this litter and so far he/she looks perfectly normal for an otter.

    Castor mini rex colour question.

Yes I did breed an otter to a castor but only because I had bred this doe to an unproven buck 3 times with no babies. She was a proven doe and this castor was the only other buck I had and I wanted to make sure it was the buck that was sterile before I got rid of him. She had a big litter with...

    Castor mini rex colour question.

I have a litter of 2 week old mini rex. 3 of them are castor. 2 have a very light coloured belly and the 3rd has a darker grey belly. The dad has the darker grey belly too but most of the pictures/descriptions of castor mini rex show the light coloured belly. Is the grey belly acceptable for...

    Frozen Water Bottles

Bowls. I live in Canada where it drops below freezing in November and doesn't thaw again until March! I use bottles through the warm months but as soon as they start freezing I switch to bowls. I have a bunch of little dog bowls with the wide bottoms so they can't tip them easily. If the...

    Woot!

Congrats! I sheared my angora's for the first time a few weeks ago. Actually I plucked one and sheared the other! I am spinning the fiber and since I can't seem to find any agreement amongst spinners as to whether plucked or shorn is better I decided to pluck one of mine, shear the other for the...

    Winter babies

I have a litter of mini rex that are just over 3 weeks old. For the past week or so I have started to notice that their ears seems REALLY short compared to the litter from the same pair that I had last June! I didn't really think there would be any difference and it was certainly not in my...

    satin angora wool

Hmmm, I always understood that the french had much better wool that the satins. I don't want to go to an english as I don't want the fur on the face or the smaller size. I wish I could find the article I read a while ago about the different wool production for each of the types! Thanks Megan...

    satin angora wool

Thanks Megan. I agree that the grooming and maintenance is fun. I can see how some people might find it is more than they expected though. There are no german angora breeders anywhere near me but that would be my first choice. I am looking into a good french buck for one breeding and then...

    satin angora wool

I can totally understand why breeders would suggest starting out with LESS wooly bunnies! They are very high maintenance. The grooming requirements are intense. I have a lot of 4Hers that inquire about bunnies and I won't even tell them about my angora's unless that is specifically what they are...

    satin angora wool

Crystal you are correct that the satins do not produce as much wool as other angora's - that is why I wanted to work with this breed as I love a challenge and want to try to improve that. A lot of breeders will cross to a german to increase wool production but I don't want to do that as the...

    satin angora wool

Today I harvested the first wool from my junior satin angora buck! I know that satins don't produce nearly as much wool as the other angora breeds but does anyone know what is an average amount for a first plucking on a satin angora? One of my goals for my angora herd is to try and increase...

    Satin Angora

I'm bumping your post Megan as I too have a pair of satin angora's and I'd like to hear some comments on yours. I can't even find any info on the correct way to pose one. I love having a rare breed but it is also difficult because there is not much information out there or breeders to ask...

    Satin angora X french angora

I have a pair of satin angora rabbits. I was thinking of breeding the doe to a french angora once and then keeping a couple of does to cross back to the satin buck. Mypair are full brother sister and are already linebred. There are no other satin angora's anywhere near me. I could breed the doe...
