    Mystifying Ailment - RIP

Thank you Lizzy and Pani. Lizzy, life sure is different without him. He had pretty much free run of the tv room and my office (it was all rabbit-proofed) and it's so lonely not to see him hopping around, playing with his toilet paper tubes and paper bags.

Thank you Breezy. It's going to be awhile before I get over this loss. :(

    Pellets and Gut Stasis.

Lizzy, I had Barley put to sleep Wednesday evening after trying to feed him and as he held the food in his mouth without swallowing, I was overcome with how wrong it all was and how miserable he was and the anxiety of it all was getting to me as well. I have a thread in the Health thread called...

Thanks so much for writing, joeysangel. I'm still in anguish over this whole affair and your post is very comforting. I didn't ask for a necropsy, partly because I just couldn't bear the thought of it on my sweet boy, but also because I was afraid they would find that there was nothing at all...

Azerane, I'm sorry I didn't see your post. No, the vet couldn't see anything wrong with Barley's teeth. He said there was a slight spur on one molar so while he was sedated, he ground it down and touched up any other teeth that looked at all questionable, but the x-rays turned up nothing...

Thank you squidpop and Nancy. It's amazing how losing one of these guys can shatter your world.

Thank you stevesmom and JBun. I really appreciate your sympathies. It's been an awful day. :bawl:

    Mystifying Ailment - RIP

I'm heartbroken to say that I had my Barley put to sleep last night after wrestling with it all day. It was taking me an hour to get 2 tbsp. of CC into him, his eyes had got all infected, either from the stuff they stuck them shut with for his sedated examination or from his attempts to clean up...

Thanks squidpop! He can use all the healing vibes you can send! X0

    Mystifying Ailment - RIP

Managed to get a couple tablespoons of CC into Barley last night before I went to bed which made me feel better, enough that I actually got about 5 hours of sleep! Took him back to the vet this morning and told him what was going on and he said they really had to put him through the wringer...

Thanks for all your posts! The vet gave Barley a sedative so he wasn't completely out but wasn't quite aware of what was going on. My daughter happens to be volunteering at this clinic for the Vet Assistant course and she said it was actually funny to see 6 people working on Barley. He had to be...

Hi squidpop, and thanks for your reply! Barley is in the vet's office today as he WILL NOT swallow any Critical Care at all, hasn't pooped in over 12 hours and is generally doing very poorly. They are doing a GA examination and will also grind down any teeth that aren't perfectly right. The vet...

Thanks for your replies, whiskylollipop and JBun! He's only been examined while conscious but he behaves just like I would if there was something stuck in the back of my mouth or my throat. I described it all to the vet and he's looked as far back as he can while Barley is awake. I'm taking him...

    Pellets and Gut Stasis.

This is interesting! I wonder if this is the cause behind my Barley's repeated bouts of GI Stasis. He's terribly picky about his greens though, and about all he'll eat is pea shoots, pea pods, kale, spinach (occasionally) and romaine lettuce. I've tried just about every vegetable available and...

    Mystifying Ailment - RIP

Hi Everyone. My almost 6 year-old Barley, a regular European black rabbit who was once a feral baby rabbit at the university, has had repeated bouts with ileus and is well on his way of having it again unless something changes. He's been examined carefully every time and had his teeth checked...

Miranda, Sammy & the 5 sneaky arrivals!

Oh my, I've certainly enjoyed scrolling through all your delightful pictures, Neejchee, and the commentary as well! It sounds like you intend to keep them all? What a houseful! I'm wondering about litter box use - do the adult rabbits use one, and would Miranda teach her young to use it, like a cat?

    Otter Co-op Pellets

I do, JBun, but thanks for bringing it up! I had to change Barley's pellets to Oxbow brand at one time when I was unable to get the Kaytee that he was used to. Going about it gradually works well and he had no ill effects. PetSmart is so annoying though - they then began stocking Kaytee and not...

    Otter Co-op Pellets

Thanks for your replies! I imagine it's pretty fresh too, Majorv. Barley likes it - I gave him a spoonful. He ignored it at first, but when he ran out of his Kaytee supply for the day, he ate the new stuff. Maybe I'll mix it half and half with the Kaytee pellets so he's getting the best of both...

    Otter Co-op Pellets

Yesterday I was in a local pet supplies store and bought a large bag of rabbit pellets for $5. The proprietor gets the pellets in huge sacks and re-bags them into smaller bags to sell. Unfortunately, the nutritional values are not written on the smaller bags, so I Googled Otter Co-op, where...

    Too Thin

I think I'm on the right track then, Jenny, because Barley is eating the Oxbow brand timothy hay which looks very much like the stuff in the picture. It's interesting that the hay in the small bags looks green and leafy, and yet the hay in the big bag I bought has more stalks and stems. I put...
