My husband and I will be building a new rabbit barn soon and I have no idea how large to build it. I was thinking 14 holes would be more than enough but now I'm not sure. How big is your rabbitry, like 8'x8', 12'x16', ect.? How many holes or cages do you have?

Pictures of your barn/rabbitry would be awesome too!

14 holes would depend on what you're are wanting to breed and show... as to how competitive you would be.

I've got around 20 rabbits at the moment.

Very true, you have a point. We are wanting to show one breed and one breed only and are hoping to be competitive this time next year. Do you think 14 holes would be enough or 20 would be better? I guess with more holes we could be a little more flexible with keeping babies to see how they mature...

My main rabbitry is 10 ft by 12 ft, and we have about 16 holes in there right now, and are going to be adding about 4 more fairly soon. I could fit probably about 30 holes in their comfortably.

The other half of my rabbitry is in the same building, (It's one whole shed, just with a wall splitting it) and we store our feed dishes, hay, feed, bedding, carriers, extra cages, etc. :)

I could put some more holes in there as well if I really wanted to lol.

We aren't out of a barn but This is our newest hutch thing. lol me and my dad built it. It currently has two 2'x3' cages on bottom and smaller cages on top i dont exactly know the dimensions. But when we want to we can put one more cage on top and switch out the two bigger cages for three more smaller ones. if that makes any sense

These are the other areas. The father back one is what we started with yet another father daughter project. The cages are all 3'x3' they were for our californians
And the closer ones are just stackables from bunnyrabbit.com

so currently in tans we have 2 herd bucks, and two brood does (one has five kits in the box) and one showable young senior. My mom also houses her himis (one buck and five does) The numbers will be fluxuating because we are selling babies still and ill be getting some new herd does, but we've been able to do this from our backyard without hearing from the HOA.

It really depends on how competitive a breed you want to get into. The big breeds in texas are netherlands, mini rex, pretty much all of the lops, and the meat breeds. I think for dwarf hotots 14 holes is enough personally. One or two bucks and three does and your ready to start a rabbitry :) Are you using hanging cages?

Plan on eventually needing 3 times as many holes as you planned on. I thought I could be competetive with 30 holes and I have 90 now.

I thought 15 holes would do it. I'm now up to 36 and have more coming. My rabbitry is 23 feet long and about 16 feet wide so I don't have to ever worry about room lol

I have 35 holes and I have a 12 x 24 foot half of a barn(other side is horse run in. I have all my feed and horse tack in with the rabbits as well. While right now I have MANY different breeds, I"m selling some of them out and expanding the Hollands and Velveteen Lops out. my cages range in size greatly, to the largest being 32 x 40(8 of them, hanging from the ceiling in the middle of hte barn) for the New Zealands and Velveteen Lops.

I'm not exactly sure how big my barn is... maybe 300sqft? I currently have 27 holes and there is still room for more. I also have a couch, refrigerator and other things in there along with the cages! I love my barn, it's the perfect size.. for now ;) I also added a picture of my barn!

We have a 10'x20' barn at the moment and we have around 30 cages hanging in it and we are about to hang 30 more up under the othe cages and we are adding another 10'x20' to it and add 60 more cages these barns are just temperary and when we get back to my moms house we are building a 20'x40' or 50' barn and the way we estimate we will be able to put over 150 head of rabbits in it.......Toby
Will get some pics of my temp barn up here soon

Thanks for the comments guys! I love seeing the pictures too. We've decided that we'll probably start out with a portable building so that we can put A/C in it for the summer. Can't wait for the income tax money to come in so we can start on it.:) Keep the pictures coming!

My rabbitry is currently 14 holes and one pet cage, but I only have a total of 10 rabbits. All of these cages are housed in the garage, until I can get my own rabbit building.
they are 24X24 stackable cages, which can be stacked up to 3 high. I raise Netherland Dwarf rabbits.

I have approx. 20 cages of various sizes and 2 breeds. I think I have the perfect number of cages for me, but would do better allotting them to only one breed. :p It's tight for two.

I would suggest deciding on your breed first, and then how big you want your cages to be and how much extra room you'd like to have in your rabbitry. Although X number of cages could fit in X sq. feet, you may decide that you want to have a grooming area or an area for playpens, etc.

Lela, can you smell your rabbits from your garage? I finallly convinced my dad to let me move the rabbits in the garage(he wouldn't give up one of his 3 sheds!!!). He has this "hypothesis" that the urine smells will seep through the walls into the house.. especially since we're downsizing to 6 rabbits, I don't think smell would be a problem

The smell definitely does not come through the walls. If it's getting close to cleaning day and I happen to accidentally leave the garage door open, I may get some complaint of the smell, but otherwise it's just fine.
