Santa Clara County health officials this afternoon confirmed an object found in a bowl of restaurant chili is a human finger.

During a 2:30 p.m. press conference, they said they aren't sure whosefinger it is. But they plan to trace the ingredients in the Wendy'schili back to the sources in an effort to track down where the fingercame from.

The inch and a half long finger tip was allegedly found in a bowl ofchili purchased Tuesday night at a Wendy's restaurant on Monterey Roadin San Jose.

Wendy's could not be immediately reached for comment following the press conference.

But earlier the fast-food chain sent out a statement.

``Food safety is of utmost importance to us,'' spokesman Joe Desmondsaid in a statement. ``We are cooperating fully with the local policeand health departments with their investigation. It's important not tojump to conclusions. Here at Wendy's we plan to do right by ourcustomers."

Devina Cordero, 20, was with her boyfriend at the Wendy's fast foodrestaurant at 1405 Monterey Road Tuesday night when she said the woman, who has not been identified, began gasping and ran up to her saying:``Don't eat it! Look, there's a human finger in our chili.'' Corderosaid the object appeared cooked and seemed to have a long fingernail atthe end. All three people soon became sick.

``We went up to the counter and they told us it was a vegetable,''Cordero said. ``The people from Wendy's were poking it with a spoon.''

Well, at least it had been cooked at a high enough temperature to kill any viruses!

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - A woman's meal at a Wendy's restaurant broughta whole new meaning to the term "finger food." The woman bit into aportion of a human finger while eating a bowl of chili Tuesday night atthe San Jose restaurant, Santa Clara County health officials saidWednesday.

The woman, who asked officials not to identify her, immediately spitout the finger and warned other diners to stop eating, witnesses said.

"Initially she did put this object in her mouth and did bite down on itand wasn't sure exactly what it was," Santa Clara County Health OfficerDr. Martin Fenstersheib said at a news conference. "She's doing OK.Initially she was a bit grossed out it was described to me, and vomiteda number of times."

Fenstersheib said the finger had been cooked at a high enough temperature to kill any viruses.

Officials said the fingertip was approximately 1 3-8-inches long and ahalf-inch piece of fingernail was also found. They believe it belongsto a woman because of the long, manicured nail.

Health investigators seized all of the ingredients at the restaurantand are tracing them back to their manufacturer. They believe thefinger got into the chili at an earlier stage.

"We have no evidence of any accident within the employees at thefacility itself," said Ben Gale of the Santa Clara County HealthDepartment. "We asked everybody to show us they have 10 fingers andeverything is OK there."

The restaurant has had only one minor health violation stemming from a leaky vent, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

"Food safety is of utmost importance to us," Wendy's spokesman JoeDesmond said in a statement. "We are cooperating fully with the localpolice and health departments with their investigation. It's importantnot to jump to conclusions. Here at Wendy's we plan to do right by ourcustomers."

Hi DazedAConfused,

Also, followed a report on 60 Minutes one time about the mintsin the dishes at Chinese Restaurants. More than 3/4s of themcame back tested positive with urine on them. Apparently, people go to the bathroom, don't wash their hands, and then dig in forsome mints.

For me, the moral of the story:Don't eat any candy in a dish that isn't wrapped when offered to the general public.
