I'm so confused about pellets and haysources. Can you help a newbie figure out the best places toget good quality food for her soon-to-be adopted buns?

(I'm confused in part because everyone at the rescue organization has a different recommendation on food!)

Thanks,

BunyBun

Are you located in North America? If so, Oxbow brand hay and pellets are the way to go - great quality.

Hi! Welcome to the forum!

There are lots of informational threads in the Rabbit 101section of the forum that you can check out about "Feeding Your Rabbit".

Here's the Feeding Your Rabbit thread:
http://rabbitsonline.net/view_topic.php?id=12046&forum_id=17

It has links at the top of that page to the Pellets, Hay, and Vegetablesection of the informational section of this site, too. I recommend checking out all three sections. :)

Here's the Pellet food thread:

Here's a good site that gives the percentages of things that pellet food should contain:
http://www.lagomorphs.com/pellets.pdf

And a site that I highly recommend for dietary information in general:
http://www.carrotcafe.com/index.html

I know it's a lot of reading, but believe me...it's WORTH it!! :D

Hope all that helps!

A bit of confusion is OK! Especially when onesource of information says one thing and another says the totalopposite! I've been there many times ;).

The best place I've gotten hay from is a feed store/hay supplier.Usually fantastic quality hay, and comes cheap in big bales. The haythat comes from pet storesin those little bags are usuallyold and dusty, so better to go with the fresh stuff from a bale :).

Pellets can vary. You can find them at pet stores, feed stores, or youcan even order online. Like the others have mentioned, Oxbow is afantastic company who makes rabbit pellets, but theycansometimes be hard to find and pricey (especially if you order onlinewith the shipping fees!)

Rosie gave some great links, so you should find the rest of the information that you need regarding pellets/hay there.

Feel free to ask more questions. Knowledge is power! ;)

The rabbit rescue is throwing out Nutriphase andPurina varieties as types they recommend for their rabbits - anyopinions on these?

I literally base the pellet food I buy based onthe percentages listed on this particular site. I knowthere's all sorts of conflicting information, so I stick to this one.

How old is your bun? You'll read in what I post below thatthere are differences in protein content per age (higher for younger, growing buns than older buns that've stopped growing).

Let me give you a couple links to some fantastic advice I was given byJimD and Naturestee (both of whom I trust completely about food advice):

Naturestee's advice:
http://rabbitsonline.net/view_topic.php?id=12249&forum_id=1

JimD's advice:
http://rabbitsonline.net/view_topic.php?id=12386&forum_id=1

I hope that helps to clear things up a bit. :)There are, of course, other members that I trust for such things, butthose are the two threads where it was stated so well, and the firstone, I asked MANY dietary questions, and they were answered veryprecisely and helpfully by Naturestee. The second lists whatJimD recommends for percentages, which matches very well with the topwebsite I list (the lagomorph site).

There you go...let me know if there's anything those don't list, and I'll find the information exactly for you, ok? :D
