Today, we found a hard lump in Floppy's dewlap. She has been on Metacam since christmas time because of the beginning's of arthiritis in her leg which she broke last year. We think she is a Holland lop at about 6 nearly 7 years old. Everything is normal, eating, pooing, weeing but she seems to be drinking more than usual and seems a bit quiter than normal. The lump is kinda in the middle of her dewlap but more swollen on the left hand side. It's bigger than a pea but not quite a golfball, kind of like an olive. Last Monday she had her Myxi jab but bounced back from that fine.

Anyone have any ideas what it could be?

abscess,s can be real bad,,and rabbits seem to be prone to get them,,i have experienced three cases/3 rabbits.//.the exotic specialist will most likely take a radiogragh,,and culture of the bacteria to prescribe appropriate action,,meds,,etc...i am very glad to hear she gets jabs,,i have heard its up to a quarterly vaccine--myxi is nothing to mess around with.//.the metacam--is for age.?.yes.?.-i am experiencing older rabbits now and was just informed about the nonsteriodal, pain swelling reliever--for-aged- rabbits /metacam/mobic-which i also take.//.this medicine can affect food intake,-if given too strong a dose,..sincerely james waller:wave::rose::bunnydance::biggrin2:

It sounds like it could be an abscess? is it attached or is it a lump within the loose skin of the dewlap ?

I do not know any side-effects from the myxi injections (Never dealt with it here) although there may be some.

I agree, it could be an abscess, although I would also want to see if it might be a fatty deposit like Chippy gets, due to the location and her age. The dewlap is mostly fatty, so a deposit make sense. But it does get wet too, which could lead to infection/abscess. The vet should be able to do a needle cytology on it--they poke the bump with a needle/withdraw liquid from it, and look at the liquid under a microscope. That can help him determine which is the cause.

The lump is attached and is very hard. Is it common for an abscess to be hard? She is still eating, drinking, pooing and peeing normally. She is acting as if nothing is wrong.
We have a vet appointment booked for tomorrow evening for Minstrel and Penguins jabs but will change it so Floppy can get seen.

Just wanted to say that I would doubt this is myxi vaccine related because most of the reactions are very general in the body, or very specifically at the injection site. Good luck for tomorrow.

I get the feeling that abscesses are usually a bit squishy, but to be honest I haven't felt one so I'm not sure.

Floppys dewlap has swollen more today. We are taking her to the vet at 5.10 so fingers crossed. Would it be best to ask for a biopsy on the lump?

Floppy's back from the vets now.
The vet suspects an abscess so she is in for a GA on Wednesday to drain and flush it. Also, the vet thinks there is a small abscess on her jaw - just like Minnie. He said an x-ray may be worthwhile to see what her teeth are like but is not necessary. She was only at the vets last Monday and there were no signs of any abscesses. Things can develop so quickly. :cry2

I'm sorry it wasn't more positive. Is she going to be on hardcore anti-bios too?

Thankfully she has a very vigilant pair of owners, so no one could have picked this up faster. I sure hope she does ok on Wednesday (and Harley too) and its something not too serious, or rather, as minimalistically serious as possible. If that makes sense.

She will be on anti biotics and she had a Convenia injection tonight (thanks Tilly! :))
Charles said that because of the metacam she is on, it could be masking the pain. We do feel a bit bad that we didn't pick it up quick enough :(
Hopefully they will both be fine. They are very priveledged- they're going in the ambulance from Berner's Street to Kesgrave :D

If it wasn't visible last week, then it sounds like you truly did pick it up as soon as was humanly possible. Yes, she might have showed signs of pain without the Metacam but you would have just presumed it was her leg because there was no other evidence that it could be anything else.

I would be a bit hesitant to let the vet flush the abscess, since you do have access to Convenia to treat it non-surgically. But that's your choice. Sorry it wasn't something easier, like a fatty deposit.

Just heard from the vet. Floppy has tooth root problems. She had her abscess lanced, drained and is left open. She is coming home at 5pm. She has some septrin and will be having convenia injections. Now I have to get my head around having two bunnies who will die from tooth root problems. I am sooooo upset.

Clare hun, she won't necessarily die from it. You took Minnie on when she had been neglected of treatment for a very long time.

That's so different from Floppy. Floppy has gotten treatment ASAP. Bunnies can live with tooth root problems fr a good fair while if they get the right treatment.

As you know, my Star has tooth root problems and right now he shows no signs of that at all and that was diagnosed in May last year. Once this has been tackled and is under control there is no saying that Floppy won't live many more years happily and die from something completely unrelated.
