Hello! I would like some advice. On tuesday, I rescued a baby rabbit (wild) with a injured leg on the side of the road. His foot got broken at the joint. He's about 2 weeks old (maybe older) and is eating, drinking, and using the bathroom fine. We also got him medicine. However, he jumped out of his box and now the bone is sticking out near his ankle. My mother wants to just adjust and wrap his leg, while I think the vet's suggestion of amputation might be better for his survival. Please let me know what you think!

If this is a wild breed rabbit(cottontail, jackrabbit, etc) you need to find a wildlife rehabilitator in your state. In some states it's illegal to have wildlife in your possession. The rehabber will be able to get the baby the proper help. You may be able to phone your local rabbit vet and they may be able to direct you to a rehabber, or try and find one through the link below.

If this is a feral domestic breed rabbit(european rabbit), then you should get the bunny to a rabbit vet for treatment. The leg will likely need to be amputated. An open compound fracture on such a young bunny would be pretty impossible to splint or pin. Because the bone is now sticking out, the vet is also likely to put him on a rabbit safe antibiotic.

Thank you for the information! I am doing research now and I will let my mother know once I figure out what he is. I was thankfully able to keep her from wrapping his leg.

Until you can get the bun to either a rehabber or vet, it's important that the bunnies movement is restricted so the injury doesn't worsen further. I would also carefully wrap the leg in sterile gauze to try and keep the wound from getting bacteria in it, if I couldn't get the bun to the rehabber or vet within the next hour. This baby really needs to get to someone tonight for the proper treatment if at all possible. The leg needs to be at least splinted and stabilized by your vet so that further injury doesn't occur.
