What makes the harlequin coloring?

Just curious how the harlequin coloring comes about, specifically in holland lops. Does it need to be in their genetics or is it a form of broken? (if that makes sense)

Harlequin is a solid color and tri is the broken variety of harlequin.

I know it is a specific allele/Gene but that’s about all I know
