We are adopting a young Dutch Bunny and the owner had his teeth looked at by a specialist who said his teeth did not need to removed at this time (Front Teeth over grown) But he told her to file his teeth down every couple of days to prevent them from getting to long.

Has anyone here tried to file down their own bunny's front teeth?

Thanx Rebecca

Congratulations on your new bunny!

I would be afraid to file teeth myself. I have my vet check the teeth and, so far, my bunnies haven't needed filing. If rabbits are eating lots and lots of hay and have plenty of toys for chewing, they may not need filing. If they did need it, I'd have my vet do it.

My rabbit has needed clipping since she was just a baby, she was born with seriously misaligned teeth and won't chew on toys or much hay because of it.

I have one vet that recommended clipping them (nail clippers, etc) and another that recommended having them filed with a low speed power tool under anesthesia. The latter can be expensive (Around $100 USD each time), but if you have the funds and don't want to do it yourself, I would do that.

I know a person who uses a dremel tool to file her rabbits teeth, just be careful if you do this because the noise may scare them and if they bite down, the disc can hurt them.. afterall, it's a power tool.

I have more often than not, clipped them myself at home or had them clipped by one of my buns vets. If you do this, maybe have somebody experienced with it do it first so you can watch.

You don't want to have a tooth break, it can possibly cause infections. If you do feel comfortable clipping them yourself, make sure you always have the clipper straight along with the tooth so it clips the tooth and doesn't put too much pressure on it elsewhere and break it.

You can get a nail clipper with the clipper on the side, which has helped me a lot. >>>> http://www.utopiatools.com/4-Sideways-Nail-Clipper.html

This will be Bunny #5 in our home. Oliver is the 3rd rabbit I'll own that's had teeth issues. I've clipped them at home on the other rabbits at home before so that doesn't scare me. I've just never been asked to fil the teeth down.

So what I'm trying to find out is do we have any RO members who have done it before.

I really don't think that even if you wanted to file his teeth that he would let you do it. :?
I heard of one person on Etherbun who apparently had such a laid back rabbit that she was able to file his teeth but that is the exception and not the rule.

I basically would not try to file teeth myself.

Clipping teeth is risky because a blunt instrument like a nail clipper applies too much pressure to the entire structure of the tooth with the risk of damaging nerves or even breaking a tooth.

I know that some people clip and take the risk because it is often so expensive to see animal dentists etc but clipping is risky
