Hi everyone,

My Holland lop doe, Beatrix, delivered 2 healthy babies last night. All seemed well although I did find it odd she only had 2 little ones because she is a pro-momma and has had between 6-8 babies before. When I got home from school I felt her belly just to make sure there were no more babies, and what do you know... I can feel a least one little baby moving around and kicking on one side still (yes, I'm positive they are babies and not just her digestion). I honestly thought this was impossible. Could it be stalled labor?? I'm assuming the baby is not stuck as it would have already been deceased (I have had much difficulty with stuck kits in the past with my other doe). Beatrix seems to be acting normal, although a little while ago she kept laying down and getting up. I have given her a few handfuls of kale, which she ate happily, and then have left her alone as not to disturb her. Any help is much appreciated!

Rabbits have two uterine horns that they can carry babies in. And sometimes they can deliver these different sets of babies, hours or even a few days apart. It's not common, but can happen. The fact that the baby is still wiggling around, means it's alive and doing fine for now, and will probably be delivered in the next few hours or maybe tomorrow.

If you're concerned about delivery complications and any serious problems arising, you would need to get your rabbit seen by an experienced rabbit vet.

Great, thank you!

The baby(s) is still in there kicking. It has moved down and I can't feel it as much on the one side, hoping this is a good sign. Beatrix is still eating and has been running around the bunny room all day. I'm getting worried as it is getting into her 32nd day of gestation and I don't want any complications of the kit(s) becoming too big... Do you all have and tips for naturally inducing labor in rabbits? Beatrix's other two babies are chubby and warm in the nest box and she has been taking really good care of them.

Thanks!

Would smoothie flavored Tums be okay to give her? Still no more babies... I getting really worried. I'm not sure if they are alive anymore. I've given her raspberry leaves, lavender, parsley, and kale. Maybe Tums will do the trick. How much should I give her (she's about 5Ibs)? Please help!

I gave Tums to when I had my first pregnant rabbit, I only gave her one tablet (she’s around 2 lbs. and 6-8 oz.) and broke it into small pieces and put it in her pellets. Tums have lots of sugar so don’t give her too much (maybe one and a half for her?). I’ve switched over to calcium drench since it doesn’t have as much sugar. I’m not sure if giving her Tums will help the babies come, but she still needs the calcium in them. If she lets you, maybe try messaging her stomach?

It’s not abnormal for a doe to deliver babies days apart, my friend is a breeder and has dealt with it a lot and babies and mama have been fine it’s nothing to worry about.

Hi guys,

She went into labor Friday morning right after I gave her the Tums. The baby didn't make it, I think it died that night as I found some blood and couldn't feel kicks by morning anymore. I don't think it was stuck because it looked normal when it came out... not sure why it died :( Mama is doing much better and her other two babies are super chubby and warm.

Thank you so much for your help!

It’s probably died because it was breathing before it made its way out the birth canal. 😕
I wish you luck with the two chubs you have, glad mama is feeling better. Bless the passed ones soul.
