It should be discarded. It might be a lot cheaper to purchase that drug from a farm supply store rather than a vet. It is not a controlled drug and is available across the counter. I buy it at Tractor Supply Co. and they have stores all over.

That's what I thought. I'll toss it.

We don't have a TSC near here, but we do have Fleet Farm which issimilar. I would really like to get it there. The vials I get from the vet are so small. Would it definitely be thesame concentration that the vet gives me ifI buy it at a store? I would wantto be really sure I wasn't giving her a wrong dosage. She takes .25cc everyother day.

Thanks,

Cara

Hey Cara

It should be thesame thing- its packaged forcattlebut its the same concentration and everything and way cheaper. You can call your vet, but the dosage should be 300,000 units per mL (150,000 units PenG procaine and 150,000 PenG benzathine).

Im looking at my bottle right now and its 100 ml (so that would be 400 doses for you) and it was only 9.99. Its called Combi-Pen-48 but also has other names like Bicillin, BiPen or TwinPen. You can call the feed store and ask if they sell it. Its Penicillin G Benzathine and Penicillin G Procaine Injectable Suspension.

I think what you have (just PenG) is administered every day, this one-that has the Benzathine is exactly the same as PenG but it is longer lasting so it is given every other day.

Hi Cara,

There are several different compounds and concentrations of this drug. It also comes under hundreds of brand names. Check the active ingredients...the drug you want should have 150,000 units of procaine and 150,000 units of benzathine for a total of 300,000 units of drugper mL. The dosing of .25cc (75,000 units) at a concentration of 300,000 units per mLis appropriate for a rabbit of around 2kg (4-5 pounds) every other day by SQ injection. I have been working on a bottle for a very long time....and I use this drug a lot....and paid less than $10 for this bottle.

I'm definitely going to check out Fleet Farm. We also have Farm and Fleet so between the two of those I should be able to find it. I can't find my last receipt but I'm sure it was more than $10 and its only 10cc. That's interesting that it's made for cattle and can also be given to teeny little rabbits.

Thanks!

This is the safe antibiotic list from medirabbit. Your 2.4 lb rabbit is about 1 kg (2.2lbs) There is a range of dosage in units. If you locate bicillin you will see the range is 47,000-84,000 u per kg.
I usually dose somewhere in the middle.
If you have a rabbit savvy vet it may be wiser to take your bun for a check and learn the correct method to give sq injections to a bun. I usually use lactated ringers solution or sterile water to mix with the penicillin. Bicillin alone can be difficult to inject, clog the syringe and/or cause sterile abscesses in the bunny.
There are many older posts on bicillin . I recommend that you read them thoroughly before trying to give the injections yourself.
