Hi I am a fairly new bunny owner I have two bunnies Mac and Cheese they are 11 months old. The other day Mac jumped up on the bed and laid down and I noticed some redness on both her hind legs. I looked onling but I cant tell if it is sore hocks? I have attached a picture belowunnamed.jpg unnamed.jpg unnamed.jpg

Yes, it definitely looks sore. What kind of flooring are the kept on? If it is very hard and/or abrasive you will need to put down some softer fleece and alternatives. You should take your rabbit to a rabbit knowledgable vet so they can see if it needs any treatment.

They are not kept on wired floor rather they are bunnies that roam free and my floor is laminated wood. Should I have a section of flooring that is softer, like fleece?

Yes it would be good for you to give a few options, such as some sort of foam, soft fleece/rug etc.

Do you recommend anything else because i have tried fleece and the chloroplast flooring but both my bunnies are chewers so they ruined both.

Hi....i have naughty chewer bunnies too. our girl developed sore hocks last year and then urine scald from a nasty bladder infection. she was a mess. she has got her fur grown back apart from a sore red patch in the middle of her right foot and a sore parch on her actual heel of the left foot. nothing is getting rid of that but everything else healed eventually.
i bathe her feet with diluted hibiscrub dry them then use a gel that acts like a bandage on the actual sore,
the vets were stunned!!! i had also used a cream from vets and vetuk online called Dermisol...it eats necrotic tissue...great stuff on bunnies with healing wounds. But the stuff helping her the most is a herbal menthol smelling gel....dermagel.
https://www.derma-gel.com/index1.html

it is a non prescription item.....can buy online in the uk....but vets dont think much of it or stock it. they think its quack medicine!!!! its amazing....i was just about to give some to lola like i had the night before but did not as she was bleeding out of bladder/vagina/rectal...vet didnt know...but also suspicious she was never spayed even though the people who gave her up told the rescue she was.
i have had to keep lola and her hubby in their ferplast cage and put down vet bedding and fleece beds...change it daily and litter tray change maybe 2-3 times a day....then once a day.
she also walks kind of funny always has...vets said she has spondylosis.
i have been using petfleece non slip version....and vet fleece with no slip back. Lola shreds every bed and puppy pads shredded in seconds!!! they had pet steps to get in and out their cage so now cannot have it back.
i will be setting up a big metal pieced pet run and lots of blankets/pet fleece/fleece beds made by a friend. everything gets chewed to bits...she has not found something yet she has not destroyed!!!!
i will then pick them up to use their cage as a bedroom. her gait is like her hips and thighs are too far apart. And that has caused the sore foot along with getting a dried sticky poop smear that i have to clean off....and dumb vet shaved one off down to bald skin and it has never healed...nurses were horrified at him!!!
As long as the sores do not become raw or bleed ....i put lola on cage rest with her hubby to let her feet heal and the horrific urine scald. we have non shiny vinyll flooring due to my daughter having a wheelchair. But no bunnies have had an issue as its not shiny...saying that there are very old slippery floor tiles in the hall and my old bunny used to run up and down like it was carpet!!!!
i will be buying lots of pet fleece pieces for the run...being a free range house bun we miss them getting up with us etc but what else can you do?
heres the uk shop..https://vetfleece.co.uk/
they have an ebay shop but i do not know international suppliers..id suggest searching ebay. lola is a chewer but touch wood the backing is intact!

dear purplebumbble,-there is a lot here-,just in the first paragraph,{been there done that}-I use coban wrap, make a little bootie,betadine,Neosporin,bactine-for any open sores.--obviously you have consulted an exotic dvm, lots of excellent dvm in u.k.-there are antibiotics, and over the counter meds--unfortunately rabbits donot come with healthcare insurance-and lots of built in problems ,need an exam and consoltation,yesterday.-I have juggled the books a lot to make sure they get proper care..sadly some people are not good book keepers..i am a disabled senior citizen.lots of medical problems and I baffle the specialist that see me breathing,-as I continue reading you plight most people are not prepared to handle such an situation,,-please post as convenient--you have your hands full-24x7--sincerely james waller for joseph r cottontail/bdenium-rip

I am sorry...it has been a long time since i have used any bunny forums....i must have misread..not unusual for me!!!
No i do not have a specialist vet....sadly....but i have been to one many years ago....it was 1.45hours to 2 hours car ride. I am epileptic so do not drive so used an animal transport i had to book in advance.
You get charged several hundred £...if you are not a client you pay at least £110 then there is the consult fee etc. i know many people with access to specialist vets though and i get very jealous!!!!
I am sorry to hear of your plight....my dad had TB when i was a baby and he was given 10 days to live.....he was in isolation for 6 months and survived but only left with a lower lobe on each lung. It seems a lot of people defy everything thrown at them and others do not cope or are unlucky. Living with a chronic condition is not easy. My epilepsy has caused me many falls etc leaving me with mobility issues....but i think of how my dad soldiered on and wished i was as strong. Mind you my dad was stubborn as could be....

we have limited pet insurance and a lot is not covered but this is still saving more...my first bunny was not insured...if my daughter and i didnt live together and pool our money we would have no insurance either.

In the past i have seen how much further USA rabbit knowledge is compared to even the specialists!
We do not have access to things like neosporin etc....and i have not had luck maling bootees but have bought socks to keep bandage and cohesive bandage in place but not used them as the fur has grown over the feet apart from two spots.

my daughter and i do not drink, smoke, leave the house...she is basically bedbound with what is suspected of being ME and fibromyalgia and now poss hypermobility syndrome....
It is a lonely life so we have the pets and our doctor commented they were "furry therapy"

Lola had steps made of plastic with a carpet tread on them....i blamed that for making it worse. They used to have this great house/hide by trixie....the roof was bark and that is how she hurt her feet to begin with.

i have seen grid floors in litter trays and cages online...we do not have those as they cause sore hocks and the night poops slips through so they dont get to eat it....but here cage bases are either smooth and slippery or with plastic raised surface to be non slip but that causes sore hocks as much!! so we use blankets, towels, fleece beds, vet fleece to cover it. but her feet just dont want to heal properly. Now we know why.

i do hope bunnies feet heal soon.

Ya that definitely looks like sore hocks. It would help if you put extra stuff on the ground like fleece or soft dog beds. You should also get some neosporin or polysporin to put on the sores. Just make sure the bun doesn’t lick it off

My 3 year old mini-lop (Ramsey) has red sore hocks, they don't look infected but just very angry. We took him to the vet about 2 weeks ago and she prescribed some antibiotics as a precaution in case of infection. but that was it. From looking at forums we have tried Sudacreme & Calendula lotion, the sores don't seem to be getting any worse but don't seem to be getting any better either. I have ordered some Dermagel online but this hasn't arrived yet (from reading the above post I am hoping this may help). I am really at a loss for what is causing the problem. Ramsey is a house rabbit, his cage has a plastic bottom covered with newsapaper and thick layer of hay, I was using recycled paper pellet cat litter in his litter tray (which I think may have started the problem) but have since replaced with Carefresh. I am regularly keeping an eye on his litter and when wet topping up with more Carefresh so he is not sitting in wet litter and changing his litter tray every 2 days. He has the run of most of the house which is carpeted, we used to lock him in his cage overnight but as he spent most of the night sitting in his litter tray he is now free range 24/7. His nails are regularly trimmed & he is not overweight. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong that may be causing the sore hocks? Its getting very frustrating as his feet look so sore and nothing seems to be working...PLEASE HELP!!!:(
