So unfortunately the free roam idea didn’t work well for Pepper he started eating the blankets and he carpet below that. If you have a bunny like me that is a digger and chewer and wondering what to do for a hutch or play ground for them since they chew on everything. And is a crafty escape artist, then hopefully this may help! I tried to find safe wood for him but he makes it very difficult, and I could barely find anything online so I really hope this helps. I used pine plywood boards 4x8s (2)(used pine before for his steps, he chews on it and he is just fine), the wire cube shelf (2-3 boxes)for the cage (you can get them by ordering online or if you have a Bed, Bath and Beyond). My husband and I screwed the two boards together and the connectors to the pine board and then zip tied the bottom and top parts of the cage so that Pepper wasn’t able to break free. I had to do a double layer cause he was jumping over a single layer of his cage. I have pictures below of what it looks like and how we did it.

Good job on the cage! Looks nice.

A couple thoughts... yeah, those connectors are usually useless when it comes to rabbits. Zip ties are definitely the way to go. When I made cages with those grids, I did not use the connectors at all and just stuck with zip ties.

You could consider covering the plywood with linoleum to make it washable. There are some types of lino that have good grip but you have to test out the types at the store. A few feel like sandpaper or rock and so they are not slippery.

Not surprising that you needed to go 2 grids high. Don't be surprised if you need to add yet another grid. 30" is usually the bare minimum for height to prevent hops over. :)
