Whata week...
As many of you know, I had my thyroid removed last Friday because of cancercous tumor that was found earlier this year. Well lets just say the week following the surgery has been horrible. The surgery itself went well, no major complications -- they did not damage my vocal chords or my parathyroid which is good. Despite the fact that my parathyroid was not damaged in any way (it controls the calcium and my blood tests the whole time were normal) I still suffered the symptoms of a sever lack of calcium the first night in the hospital. My entire body went numb and they gave me high doses of calcium intravenously and about 8 hours after the numbness started, I finally regained feeling in my entire body. Once again, I was the oddball in the group who still suffered the symptoms without actually having the issue.
If that was not bad enough, I also got extremely sick from morphine and opted to try a different pain killer. In the morning I took Percocet before they sent me home and normally this does not make people nautious, I was so sick that they had to give me IV Gravol. But to make matter worse, as soon as they started giving me the Gravol, my IV started to hurt so bad that I couldn't stand it.
Eventually I did get home and they put me on high doses of calcium as they do with all patients with this procedureas a precaution. Well normally this does not affect people in the short term and your body just flushes the extra calcium out without an issue. Well I suffered severe nausea, fatigue, muscle weakness, tiredness, and my heart was racing all week before we got an appointment with the specialist because I was so sick I could not get out of bed let alone function. And with H1N1 in our region, I was too afraid to go to Emergency. Well by fluke the night before I forgot to take a calcium supplement and low and behold, the next morning I felt almost back to normal. So off to the doctor we go and I tell them this and they assure me it is extremely unlikely it was the calcium bothering me. So to prove them wrong I went home and took the dosages they recommended and sure enough, within 12 hours I was sicker than a dog. And in a matter of hours after stopping the calcium, I was back to feeling well again.
So the moral of the story I guess is you know your body best and despite the fact that doctors refused to believe I had actually correctly diagnosed my issue, I now know I am correct. I also know that I appear to always be in the minority for odd reactions to drugs. I mean, who would have figured that a vitamin would have had such a huge effect on my well being.
And despite feeling so sick, I stayed in line for 4.5 hours yesterday to receive the H1N1 vaccine because it is raging through my school. At least they were considerate and gave me a chair because I had so recently had surgery.
And we all know the loss of Naomi was just the icing on the cake of a very bad month.
I can't say I am sad to see October go, here's to a much much better November.:toast:
