so my 3 month old holland lop has been drinking about 4x what she should be and is peeing WAY too much, and the pees are super big and diluted. I took her to the vet praying it was a UTI but it wasn’t. They ran blood tests and her kidneys were fine but she had an abnormality in 1 liver value (rest were fine) and a low albumin count (produced in liver). Other than the excessive drinking and peeing there is literally nothing wrong with her. The vet did say that their blood testing machines have a setting or whatever for small animals but are calibrated mostly for dogs/cats, and she said if her albumin levels were as low as the test results said she wouldn’t be walking and probably wouldn’t be breathing. The vet couldn’t give me anything to treat this and said she honestly didn’t know what we could do for a rabbit.
She recommended that we do another round of blood tests and have them sent to a lab with specialized equipment. She also said we should do an ultrasound but the closest place that will do this for rabbits is over 4 hours away. I don’t know how soon I could get an appointment, how much it would cost, and I would have to rent a car for 2 days and pay for a hotel room. At the very very least it would be 3.5 weeks before I could go. My heart is physically breaking. She’s so happy and energetic and I feel like she’s going to start getting worse and die and I don’t think I could survive that. She’s literally 3 months old. She’s been gaining weight and the vet said she really believes we can get through this but she won’t say it’s going to be fine and it’s killing me.
I don’t think it’s fatty liver disease or toxic liver because she’s acting completely normally. But I will say she was on a bunch of medications right before this started (for constipation) including a painkiller. That or coccidia are the only things I can think of, although I don’t think coccidia would have randomly appeared/ wouldn’t that have shown up on blood test?
I’m going to do another round of blood tests this week and see how they turn out. I’m so sad. I lost a bunny before her and Peach is my life. She’s 3 months old and I can’t lose her. If you read all of this thank you. And if there’s someone out there somewhere that has experienced this or knows anything please please please help me. Or if I should change her diet from pellets and hay to something else? I’ve been crying since last night and this is breaking my heart. The vet told me she’s contacting a specialist at the university with ultrasound but the only thing she told me to do was keep her happy and fed and I feel like she just sent me home to watch Peach die. I know you guys understand that Peach is my entire world. She’s the most important thing in my life and I don’t think I could ever recover from losing her.
