My son is coming up to 9 months old and I haven't had a bunneroo for quite some time now. Would love to look into getting one from the SPCA but as Thomas is so young, I'm nervous about him being rough.

He terrorises the cat and yanks her fur out as it is.

Would it be wise to wait until I can teach him about gentle animal handling?

My daughter is 17 months. I mostly keep her separate from the rabbits. Sometimes I let Guinness out while my daughter is awake because Guinness is willing to be petted by her. Sometimes I let Oberon out too, even though he hates it. But Melody is just too excited by animals, even though she knows "gentle."

I would wait at least until your son knows how to pet nicely when you remind him. Just be aware that you'll want to supervise every instant of bunny time with him until he's at least past his toddler years.
