Hi all, here in Nz I can't get my hands on any rabbit probiotics & apparently the strains they use for horses is the same as rabbits? As anyone heard otherwise?

My bun Coco Puff was on baytrill a month ago for an itchy ear & it really knocked her little body around! she started loosing little patches of hair & her skin went really dry & She also lost abit of weight & being a special needs bunny that's the last thing you need!

A friend of mine is an equine vet & has gotten me some horse probiotics that I'm picking up on Sunday so I can start re-colonising Coco Puffs sensitive digestive tract with healthy gut flora. Someone mentioned a human probiotic but the strains are totally different to the rabbit strains and some are lacto strains being dairy which I don't see being great for a bun!

Let me know your thoughts :)

Amazon has Bene-bac, so you could simply order some.

Ive already tried to get bene bac off Amazon but they don't ship to Nz so that's why I'm going for a horse probiotic as I've literally tried everywhere for one in Nz but there is Nothing.

The only rabbit specific probiotic that I'm aware of is Fibreplex. It's sold in the UK and Europe, but some companies may ship internationally if you don't mind the shipping costs. I'm a bit tempted to order some myself.

Otherwise most of us just use whatever pet or horse probiotics are available in our country. Human ones will work too if they are non dairy.

It's hard to know if probiotics actually help at all, but it usually won't hurt to try giving them to see if they might.

Nutramax used to make a rabbit probiotic but they pulled it off the market. Basically we're not sure if probiotics help, but they probably don't hurt either. A study on dog probiotics showed that only two of the products on the market even had the strains they said they had in them in the quantity they said was in them.

Thanks everyone. It's really hard to ship anything into Nz because of customs and even horse probiotics here have to be administered by a vet!! Luckily my friend is an Equine reproductive & surgery specialist & I'm picking some up from her today.

I took Coco in for a health check as I felt her teeth needed looking at and found out she has actually put weight on & her teeth just need a little rasping so she only needs a sniff of gas! Phew!! My little disabled Coco Nutty (Puff) is such a precious little fiery soul so I'm glad she is doing great at 10months of age :) Let's hope these probiotics help restore some beautiful gut flora after being on antibiotics & a wormer at the same time!
