Excessive Drooling but NOT a teeth issue

Hoping someone can help me with this issue...I have a 7 y/o male netherland dwarf mix. For the past few weeks he has had excessive drooling coming from the one side of his mouth. He’s also lost some weight and has been drinking more than usual. Otherwise his behavior is completely normal.
The drooling covers the side of his face near his nose and chin. I took him to the vet and she knocked him out to look at all his teeth and said they were fine, but there was a small growth on the inside of his cheek and it was a little inflammed. She gave me metacam and orbax and said it might be an infection, she also said it could be cancer...
Just seeing if anyone else has had a similar issue and hopefully it wasn’t cancer!

Did she take a sample of the growth at all? That’s the only way to know for sure. Hopefully the metacam will reduce the inflammation a bit, and if it is an infection the antibiotics might help. Since he has lost weight, have you noticed him eating less? Need to make sure he keeps up with eating, and you’ll have to syringe feed if he isn’t getting enough.

She said she couldn’t because it was so small...if his drooling doesn’t reduce with the medication within a week (by this upcoming Monday) she told me to go to a more specialized vet hospital like Upenn so they could remove it. I haven’t noticed him eating less...but I could do try syringe feeding. Would I use critical care?

It would be useful for them to take a needle biopsy before removal, as that gives a better idea of margins to take etc - it would need to be tiny to be too small for a needle biopsy!! I think that’s a good plan to go to a more specialised vet though. Well presumably he is eating less if he is losing weight - if you notice he is still eating lots of hay, and finishing all his pellets and greens it might be worth upping the amount of pellets he is getting to help him put on a bit of weight.

I’ll start adding pellets in his diet to get some more weight on him! And definitely if he doesn’t get better I’ll have to take him elsewhere for the needle biopsy. It’ll be costly but I can’t not help him out...Thank you so much!!!

Just in case anyone ever finds this post and has a similar issue...my rabbit is no longer drooling! After about 6 days of antibiotics and anti-inflams as well as the probiotic, there was almost no drooling. Vet said to continue for 4 more days, and now he’s back to normal! Was definitely some kind of infection causing a blocked duct in his mouth. No drooling and eating up his pellets. A happy ending
