I took the photo below at a rabbit show yesterday of a Holland Lop with a vertical white line down the center of each pupil (in the eye, not on the cornea). I sent it to Dr. Hreiz of ARBA and thought others might find his reply informative:

"E. cuniculi is your #1 differential for stromal masses such as this. The parasite migrates all over the spinal cord and even can be in the eye where they form abscesses such as this. Your other differential would be a stromal abscess of bacterial origin.

This individual should prophylactically treat this rabbit with fenbendazole (Safeguard or Panacur) at 30 mg/kg once a day for 28 days is the treatment. This organism is shed via urine so any rabbits in close proximity should be treated as well. If signs do not resolve, then an antibiotic would be good to give a try."

I saw this once in a shelter rabbit who had no symptoms (only the dot in her eye.).. at the time I had no idea what it was.
this is interesting
thanks Pam

thank you for the picture,,i am unable to furnish a picture of sugar(a rescue dutch bun)-her right eye,,near the tear duct has-an odd-film on the cornea,,i tried terramycin-to no avail ,,i have been watching it,,hoping it would dissolve--or get cleaned off by the paws.//.the dvm i got her from didn,t think anything of it,,but it bothers me,,-sincerely james waller:wave::inlove::bunnydance:

James: If you can stomach some grosser eye pics, that link I posted has several different diseases. It sounds like it could be the third eyelid protruding, a blob of fur/mucus on the eye (Frida gets these a lot), or maybe some other eye thing. You description reminds me a lot of this pic of a corneal ulcer (not very gross): http://www.medirabbit.com/EN/Eye_diseases/Differential/Corneal_ulcers.htm

hi,claire..,,love that medi-rabbit-site,,the picture(eye)on the left,,the white rabbit.//sugar,s- eye thing is simular to that picture,,,but not on the pupil--not impairing her vision,,toward the corner,,nearest the nose....just bothers me,,i am very finicky about my buns,,.sincerely james waller:wave::rose::biggrin2::p:bunnydance:

I see. That picture is of a corneal ulcer. A vet can do the staining shown in the picture on the right to see if that's exactly what's going on. I would definitely have it checked out, since we had a bunny with a corneal ulcer that wasn't treated and eventually led to him losing his eye come into the shelter a few weeks ago.

yes,,-certainly looking like a revisit,,the dvm is an exotic-specialist--thats the odd thing about adopting this bun,,i was told sugar had a complete exam.??--i am thinking otherwise...i,ll watch it ,check on her eye.??--in the event something else runsamuck...sincerely james waller--i,ll do more research,,call esther van pragg.phd,,jeniffer graham-phd,or glen livingston.phd.(rabbit secrets).:rose::shock::p:?:bunnydance:--trying to get a picture-for you too,.
