When I was calling around looking for vets aftermoving to Ottawa, one place referred to them as "pocket pets". Whaaaa?Since when can a rabbit fit in your pocket??

Yeah, didn't go to that place. We found a very rabbit savvy vet, although this place is a bit on the pricy end. We're moving soon, andI'm going to search for a new vet in our new area.

It's not pumpkin that's unfit for a rabbit, it's that vet!The guy doesn't know what he's talking about. Take it fromwhere it's worth, Kathy. The guy doesn't know what he'stalking about.

Buck Jones has some names of good rabbit vets in the area of NJ andPA. Will definitely forward them onto you when I get his bookin front of me. I think one of them was at the North ShoreAnimal Hospital...maybe??? Will let you know.

If your friend wants other opinions, I'd be happy to talk to him andconference in a call with him and some people that have made rabbithealth their profession - would be happy to have you join us.I wouldn't pay that guy one more single cent. Sounds likehe's out for blood money. $400 - for what???Nothing!! That poor owner and rabbit. What has theowner got to lose - other than a lot more money taking his rabbit to avet that doesn't know quack.

The guy's nuts if he takes the rabbit back to that psycho. He can't be trusted.

I'm sorry this has upset the owner and you so much, Kathy. You're such a loving person, and it's obvious that the owner is toobecause he's trying by taking the rabbit to the vet.

What a rip-off! Idiots like that give vets a bad name.

I don't think you told the guy anything wrong. Iwould have been out of that vet's office faster than you can say binkyas soon as the vet refused to show the problem with the teeth.

That vet must have been on something! What kindof vet would tell you there is something wrong withyourrabbit's teethand not show you!? Even the nonrabbit savvy vets wouldn't do that. I really hope he can find abetter vet, nobody deserves one that... unsmart shall I say? ;)

Wow, what a terrible experience you had. I'm so sorry you hadto go through something like that. Nobody should have to dealwithidiots like that.

I really wish I had a vet like Dr.Goode. She sounds awesome.

I'm sorry to hear about your horrible experienceblue buns. I don't know how someone could tell you it wasyour fault that your bunny died. I too have had badexperiences with a vet. My mini rex has to have her teethtrimed and the vet horrified me. He held her and snaped herteeth off with wire cutters and there was blood all over hermouth. He continued to trim her nails and nipped hertoes. So not only was she bleeding in her mouth but now shewas bleeding from her feet too. He didn't even try to stopthe blood and told me that it doesn't hurt. My sister alsolost a bunny from another vet who told her to take her bunnies to thepark to run around. That day he died in her arms on the wayto the emergency. Unfortunatly there are always people tryingto take advantage of others. BlueGiants you didn't let anyonedown. You are doing everything that you can tohelp. I really hope that the owner does get a secondopinion. Even if he doesn't, don't think that you havefailed.

Stephanie we have 2 vets here in my town that reffer to bunnies, ratsand guinea pigs as pocket pets ;) Weird but hey that's what they do

Kathy, I feel so bad for you, the guy and that poor rabbit.

I'm generally so patient buthad that been me andApollo, well let's just say that the vet would have had some problemswith his teeth before I left. I would have snatched Apollo and ran likethe hounds of Hades were behind me.

When I took Apollo in to the vet, he said he'd never seen arabbit so big. But Flemish are incredibly rare in these parts. He knewright away he was a giant breed though. When I told the vet how I hadbeen treating Apollo he asked why I hadn't been giving him the cannedpumpkin. I told him Apollo won't touch it.

I would implore the gentleman to please get a second opinion. It's his choice but I would hate to see this quack vet do something toendanger the rabbit.

$400 worth of work and he won' show him what's wrong. What ascam. This vet needs his license yanked like yesterday. I don't knowwhat bubble gum machine he got it from but it needs to be burned.

You are an awesome breeder and person. I hate that you and theowner are even in this position. I'll be praying for all involved.

I wonder if you could ask the owner to come here to the forum. Then he could see for himself that he needs a second opinion from aREAL rabbit savvy vet.

most people assume JUSTbecause a Vet can properly Vet Snakes andLizards that they know rabbits , ( they must knowwhat they are talking about , after all they tendExotics ) right? Wrong, Snake and Lizard Vetting is totallydifferent from Rabbits and Birds.
Yup, yup, yup! I've currently got 4 different vets: one eachfor cats, ferrets, reptiles & the rabbit. The catscould go to any one of the "exotic" vets, but there's a cat specialistright around the corner from us, whereas the exotic vets are all abouta 45 min drive (each in a different direction). :p

When I first got my Meat Bunny, I asked our herp vet (who's awesome w/reptiles & very reasonably priced) if he knew of a good rabbitvet. He said that he didn't know any that specialized inrabbits, & he hesitated to recommend somebody who knew evenless than he did. He also said that he generally hatestreating small mammals, just because people usually wait until thecritter is on death's door to bring it to the vet, & then whenit dies the vet's blamed for not working a miracle cure.Since I was already a good customer, though, he said he'd be happy tolook at my rabbit. "Is he sick?" "No... I just needto get her spayed." "Oh" ::winces:: "I'd never do that to arabbit. Are you sure it's not a boy? Neuters areeasy!"

Needless to say, I found a different rabbit vet, Meat came through herspay w/ flying colours, & the herp vet is still doing a bang-upjob w/ my lizard & turtle. ^_^

(sigh!) Well, I've called him twiceand both times had to leave messages, withall the infoyou guys were kind enough to give me. (4 different vet namesand numbers... Stong suggestions not ot return to the "Exotic VEt",etc. He has caller ID... he'd know it was me on the phone.

I just hope he's getting the messages... ThankyouEVERYONE for all your help and advice. Will letyou know what I hear...

if he doesnt answer you at this point, it is outof your hands; you have provided him with ample info, resources andoptions. what else can you do? nothing.. it is in his court now!

****BUMP for Horsenut*****

There is a couple of postings here about the term "exotic vet".

Goodluck and I hope everything turns out well for you and your bunny.

Just wanted to let you know, I finally spoke tothe guy and made sure he had all the names and numbers.Repeated my offer to pay for a second opinion. He said he'dtry to get an appointment over the weekend (cause he works a lot ofhours Mon-Fri). Guess you're right. I've done all Ican. Just have to wait and see.... Thanks again.

:foreheadsmack:

Had to let you all know, I just got off thephone with the owner of the white Flemish. Hetookthe rabbitto Dr Goode. She trimmedhis teeth properly (they were so uneven, it looks like the other guydidn't even do that right! And he put the rabbit under anesthesiatoo!). Dr Goode didn't need to anesthetize therabbit. If they need to be removed, he'll let Dr. Goode doit. I feel so much better! Thank you very much forall your advice and recommendations! (And shetoldhimthe NutriCal was fine to use with rabbits!)

What good news!Dr. Goode soundsfantastic! I can understand the concern about theuse of Nutri Cal on rabbits, because the excessive calories can be ahealth risk. However, the product can literally be a lifesaver in certain situations.

I also agree with Gypsy that it is not safe to make the assumption that"exotic vet" equates to rabbit specialist -- this is simply not true inmany cases.

Cathy :

I am so glad you were finally abeto talk to the Guy with theFlemish , poor Rabbit probly didnt even needtrimming inthe first place. What are thechances the Other " vet " ( loosely used here) messed up the teeth enough tocreate further problems? I was asking myvery the otehr day about thisthread actually , and Hementioned IF the teeth didnt needtrimming to start with a poor job would be a problem later on, IF the root was damaged . My poorVet I drive him ascrazy as I do Pam with all my questions .He also mentioned He would be pleased to Consultif need arises .
