BUNNYHEALTH

Reminder#1 – Proper diagnosis is essential! Don’t treat the symptoms, find the cause! See your vet!!

Reminder#2 - There is no one expert opinion on rabbit care. It’s anevolving science, even the professionals candisagree.

Reminder#3 – Recommended care may differ between breeders and house rabbits(but its not apples and oranges)

EmergencyKit: plain cannedPumpkin (for fibre), Syringe, Simethicone (baby gas drops under brandnames My Baby, Baby’s Own,Mylicon, Ovol), Pedialyte (forhydration), *Safe heating pad (for CONFIRMED hypothermic bunnies),*Plastic, quick acting digital thermometer (note: taking a bunny’stemperature is a controversial issue and should never be attemptedwithout a lesson from a vet), Critical Care (or slurry mix, fornon-bloat bunnies who won’t eat), Medicam (prescription painmedication), Nutrical (supplement for cats and dogs for weight loss, weakness, anorexia, recommended for rabbits by someexperts)

Feedback welcome, especially on the emergency kit part. I keep thinking its not quite right.

(Besides, will be good to keep it bumped).

Great information in thoseposts. For the emergency kit I would suggest morethan one syringe. Smaller size syringes, I think workbest. They also should have a nub ( don't know what else tocall it) on the end that you put in the rabbitsmouth. The nub sticks out beyond the end of thesyringe. Beckie

Speaking of syringes, i found that the easiest(for me & bun) way to administer liquid meds is to carefullysquirt it on feet & chest. (Sounds odd i know) The buninstinctively licks it up. The trick is to apply a smallamount with each "squirt" so it doesn't roll off the fur. Practice!:)In this case it was crushed Baytril (smells & no doubt tastesterrible) dissolved in apple juice. Use the minimum amount of juiceneeded to absorb the med & your job will be much easier.

Very helpful site: House Rabbit Society. Does not overwhelm with info.

I don't have too much problem with my rabbitstaking medicine (or Critical Care) - BUT - I think it is partly becauseI use flavored pedialyte (they love the fruit flavor more than thegrape) or baby food. I tend to use the following flavors:

Stage 2: Bananas

Bananas w/ apples & pears

Mixed Cereal w/ applesauce & bananas

Stage 3:Rice Cereal w/ apples & bananas

Bananas w/ tapioca

(Do we see a theme of bananas? Well - I figure since they love them...I'll use that to help them take medicine).

I also keep baby food green beans and spinach if I have a doe that isnursing but I feel she needs more iron or something.

Since I do breed, I have started using the banana flavors with my"runts" that are still nursing but maybe not getting enough food inaddition to nursing. I have also used it with a baby that washaving a hard time nursing (very young). I don't know yet ifit worked...I used it today - but I figured that it would have a hardertime inhaling the rice cereal mixture if I put it on its lips and letit lick it off.

There is one problem though if you use this with your rabbits with anyregularity. Jacque now comes running up to me to pick him upand as soon as I do, he starts licking his lips and then kissing myhand while he waits for me to get his baby food. Fortunately,he's still young enough and small enough that I'm giving it to him -about 3 cc per day now. I'm dreading the day when I have tosay "Sorry Jacque..you don't need this anymore."

Anyway - the point of this lengthy message was mainly to say you mighthave an easier time getting your buns to take medicine if it is mixedin with either flavored pedialyte or baby food. In fact, Iwork with all of my young rabbits now to take the syringe at least acouple of times before they go to new homes - with the pedialyte andthe baby food. This way, it is less stressful for them (Ihope) if they need medicine in the future.

I tried the Baytril in baby food - Daisy took itthe first time, but that was it! Putting it in a banana slice failedalso. The vet gave me a syringe & a barbaric-looking devicesupposed to place the pill in the back of the bun's throat - i used thesyringe as described.

I putmeds in pumpkin, which is afavorite treat around here. And plus, it can besyringed if they get picky. You can also ask your vet tocompound the med with something yummy- my regular vet added appleflavor and sweetener to Baytril, and the emergency vet added bananaflavor to Baytril. Unfortunately, none of mine will touchbananas.

For syringe feeding, I would personally choose a pellet slurry, as it'smore like the rabbit's regular food. You can find severalrecipes at the Morfz reference site posted above.

I know I have articles that should be posted, but they're on my home computer.

I found a very easy way to give Pebbles, Nutri-Cal.

I squeeze it out onto some oats, and then sprinkle some oatsover it, so it is covered with oats. Thisway it doesn't stick to anything, and Pebbles gobbles it uplike a treat.

Rainbows! :)

Personal advice is what posting on a forum is for :)

The links are for people who would prefer to do a little researching ontheir own. Plus, if they are interested in finding past discussionsabout a topic, they can always use the search feature.
