Hello - My wife and I have a 3.5 year old Mini Rex named Pancho. Until recently, Pancho has been a very well-behaved rabbit - his litterbox habits were great, he was very sweet and affectionate, and he did not seem very territorial. We would let him have free roam of the house when we were home and never marked our living room or bedroom. We could even let him on the bed and the couch to explore and he had no issues.

However, in the last few weeks (we think since beginning our COVID-19 quarantine), Pancho's behavior has become much worse. For starters, he is pooping everywhere except his litterbox. We have been finding them in the living room, all around his pen (instead of his box, like normal), and all of his normal favorite spots that he used to never mark. Especially his wet poops, which he has been leaving in other spots where he hangs out. He has also been eating tons of cardboard, which he used to do occasionally, but now it seems compulsive, and we think it is hurting his stomach and giving him more wet poops. To top it all off, this week Pancho has peed outside of his box three times - on the couch, on the rug, and inside his hutch right next to his box. When he leaves wet poops outside of his box, we go and put him in his box, and when he pees outside of his box, we close him in his hutch for awhile, but he just seems to be upset with us and more prone to retaliate later.

Pancho has a hutch to himself and a nice sunroom enclosed by a gate and we change his litterbox every 24-36 hours. Since his behavior changed, we have been keeping the gate closed during the day and letting him have a limited exercise area in the house first thing in the morning and for a few hours at night.

While we think this may have something to do with us being at home 24/7 because of the COVID quarantine, we do want to make sure that he uses his litterbox properly and goes back to being the loving bun we know Pancho to be. Can anybody help us get our bun back on track?

It's actually sounding more like a health issue to me. When a rabbit isn't feeling well, it can cause unusual behavior changes. Especially with him leaving his cecotropes behind and trying to eat cardboard. Those are both pretty good indicators of a possible digestive issue. What is his exact diet like (type and amount of pellets, hay, veggies, treats), and about how much does he weight? Also, is he shedding right now?

Thanks for your reply. Pancho weighed about 3.4 lbs at his last visit to the vet. We give Pancho 1/8 cup of Kaytee Fiesta food twice a day and a small handful of parsley/cilantro every day. He also has an abundance of hay in his litter box and in another box in his pen.

What kind of hay? Is he eating it really well, at least a pile of it the size of his body per day? Is he shedding?

We use Kaytee brand Timothy Hay. He does eat about a pile the size of his body per day. He is shedding quite a bit right now, but his behavior hasn't really changed during shedding in the past.

Rabbits will sometimes start eating a lot of cardboard because their gut motility is slowing down, so they crave cardboard for fiber to try and get things moving again(even though it doesn't really help in doing that ). A slow down in gut motility can also cause cecotropes to not form properly, and because of this it alters the microbial balance. Then the cecotropes no longer smell right to the rabbit, so they leave them uneaten. This is called cecal dysbiosis. The recommended fix for this is decreased pellet amounts and increased hay consumption(fiber increases gut motility ) I would half the pellet amount and free feed the grass hay, and try that for a week to see if there's a difference. It may even become necessary to derease the pellets more. Though when decreasing pellets it's important to make sure that lots of hay is actually being consumed and to monitor body weight.

The only other possible cause for the change of behavior that I can think of that's not diet related, is that the change of routine is upsetting him and so he's acting out. And only way to fix that is find a way to get things back to normal for him, or a set up and/or routine that he's comfortable with. Rabbits are creatures of habit. They don't usually like there to be changes to their life.
