Our Flemish Giant has been licking his dewlap vigorously lately so we decided to check it out tonight and find what looks like an abscess or maybe that he was biting at the skin and self inflicted it on his dewlap. Can anyone identify what this is? No fluids but there looks to be a hole in it. we are taking him to the vet tomorrow.

That looks really sore, I’m glad you’re seeing a vet ASAP!

I would say abscess. I don't think it would even be possible for your rabbit to self mutilate so close to the chin. Bot fly might also be possible if there is a lump and hole, though your picture isn't what I would typically expect to see if it was this.

Even though you'll be going to the vet tomorrow, I would check the area very carefully tonight to make sure there are no fly eggs or maggots. Fly strike can happen very quickly and be fatal within hours of occurring.

It is a good thing that you found out earlier that there were abcess and chew hole on his dewlap. My late bunny had one between his leg and belly. It was quite hidden. My uncle came to check on him when he started to be very passive. He only showed his signs of illness at the very last minute. I panicked and we were to getting ready to get him to the vet. My bunny went to the rainbow bridge before we can make it to the vet. It was all my fault. I should have been more meticulous. I should have been able to notice the abcess and chew hole earlier.
