    Baby Rabbit Health Care

So far, everything is A-OK in the poop department. The little scamp alternates between eating, sleeping and binkying. Of course he stops the binkying as soon as he sees me holding up my phone, so we'll just have to settle for these pics from today:

    Baby Rabbit Health Care

The good news is that I'm in Canada where rabbit vaccinations aren't required. Also, I went to his rabbitry when I picked him up, it's indoors and there are no horses or similar animals around. I will have his blood work done when he's neutered. Vets charge insane prices for "exotics" here...

Most popular rabbit breed for pet

I understand what you're saying. I know that shelters have to find homes for these rabbits, and that often the breed is misidentified, but not deliberately. But deliberately misrepresenting the breed or characteristics of a pet up for adoption is just plain wrong. It's a recipe for a bounce...

    Baby Rabbit Health Care

I've always adopted adult or young adult rabbits, but now I have a 6 week old Flemish baby. I want to make sure he gets a good start in life. First of all, do baby rabbits require any vaccinations? If so, which ones and at what age(s)? Secondly, do they need to be wormed? If yes, is a...

Most popular rabbit breed for pet

When I look over the local rabbit for sale ads, I see a lot of misidentified breeds and crosses advertised as purebreds. Shelters are the worst offenders. The biggest shelter for rabbits in my area advertises ALL shorthaired, medium sized, erect eared rabbits as "Americans". Americans are a rare...

    Pellets over Hay

Ok, limited pellets for adults, more for the babies less than 6 months. Good advice! I found this summary on the house rabbits site: http://rabbit.org/faq-diet/ What are the basics of a good house rabbit diet? A rabbit’s diet should be made up of good quality pellets, fresh hay (timothy...

    Pellets over Hay

OK... I didn't realize that was too much. They usually don't eat the whole bowl in one day anyway, it's more like every second day. But I'll measure it out instead of guessing in the future. They do eat hay as well. I'm not sure how much Saoirse weighs, but she's still not fully grown...

    Males or females?

I'm guessing these are baby bunnies? They're harder to sex. First of all, as a disclaimer, I am not a breeder and my experience with sexing is limited. Others may disagree with my opinion here. From what my old eyes can tell, the first pic looks female. #2 looks female to me (teardrop...

    Males or females?

I use Photobucket to post pics as well. The way I find works best is to click the "Insert Image" icon above the message window here (looks like a mountain with a sun) and it will ask you for a URL. Use the "Direct" URL in Photobucket, copy/paste into the Insert Image box. This will post your...

    Pellets over Hay

I understand the need to limit pellets in adult rabbits, and this is what I do with Zelda and Stewart. They get a small dish with about 2-3 cups of timothy pellets each day, and unlimited hay. I buy timothy/grass hay mix by the bale. Everyone (rabbits, guinea pigs) loves it, and they converge on...

Saoirse, Stewart, Zelda and the Zoo

Just a quick update since I wasn't allowed to edit my last post. I've decided to call the little guy Oscar. I've always liked the name, and I think it suits a big black bunny.

Saoirse, Stewart, Zelda and the Zoo

Another long time no write. I've had a couple of health issues including a 2 week bout of the flu which I'm still getting over the dregs of. I ended up deciding to rehome Rupert. I tried everything to tame him, but the only progress was that he would take (snatch) treats from my hand, or...

    Pets

This is the best I could do with a cellphone that delays taking the pic for 5 seconds after you push the button.

    Furminator?

I use a shedding blade on my lionhead cross. Furminators are grossly overpriced and I haven't heard much good about the job they do. You use a shedding blade both with and against the grain of the hair. Here's an example of one, but they're easy to find at pet stores...

    Pets

This would be a complex question for me. I keep a variety of pets, from cats and dogs and rabbits to several species of birds, to puffer fish. I love each species in a different way because of the different ways to interact with them. For the most part, I do have a favourite of each species...

Catching them at it while a camera is in reach is another story! :camera

Saoirse, Stewart, Zelda and the Zoo

Haven't had much time to write lately, as my life has been busy - not necessarily in a good way. First of all, one of my molars split in half down to the root, of course right when I could least afford a dentist bill (I don't have a dental plan). At first it was only a minor inconvenience, until...

Unusual behaviour - peed on my bed

If it only happened once, it could be a fluke. Maybe his litter box was dirty or he couldn't get to it on time? If it keeps happening, then it would be time for a trip to the vet to be checked for a urinary tract infection or stones/granules in the urine.

    Bringing home new bunny/bonding questions

Rabbits are a lot like people, no two will necessarily get along, and even the ones who get along sometimes take a while to work all the bugs out. My advice would be to let your rabbits decide how slow or fast they get to know each other. Watch their behaviour and that will be your guide...
