House Rabbit Society launches new website (2024)

I just stumbled across HRS' website that has been revamped and re-done. It is https://rabbit.org/ (still same link) but they seem to be calling it rabbit.org Foundation. One of their board members is Marinell Harriman (author of The House Rabbit Handbook) and she has numerous articles on the...

    Chickens! We finally got some.

Been wanting chickens for years. This past weekend we picked up 5 pullets -- around 4-5 months of age. Hoping they will be laying some pretty eggs in the next few weeks. 🐣

    Cottontails trying to stay cool

It's 107F today🥵 and the cottontails struggle to keep cool. I went to sit out on the porch and this little fella started to hop away but thought better of it. He returned (1st pic) even though I was a mere 4 feet away. Then he settled in the damp ground under the pot and relaxed (2nd pic).

    Recommended Housing Sizes

While we all know bigger is better when it comes to rabbit housing, what would be considered too small? Well those minimum recommendations can vary greatly depending on who is answering. Below is a sampling of various recommendations from rabbit societies and vets. One thing they all agree upon...

A PROPER DIET FOR PET RABBITS

What Should I Feed my Bunny? by Dana Krempels, Ph.D. http://www.bio.miami.edu/hare/diet.html The House Rabbit Society stresses that rabbits should live indoors, and have at least four hours of quality running/playing time per day. This, in conjunction with a proper diet, will help keep your...

What is "Bunny Chat"? - Please read before posting on this board

There seems to be some confusion on what this Bunny Chat board is for. This is a board for our bunnies to chat among themselves! :) For example: "Hi everyone! My name is Thumper. I live in my human's bedroom but get to roam the house every day." An actual example can be seen at the following...

RHDV2 safety statements from Sherwood, Oxbow, & Small Pet Select

Since some have expressed concern regarding hay being a potential source of transmitting the RHDV2 virus to our rabbits, I thought it might be of some comfort to see what two manufacturers have stated. (I'll link this under the RHDV2 thread too.) SHERWOOD PET HEALTH Worried about RHVD2? This...

RHVD2 in the US - what you need to know (includes map, pg 3)

There has been much in the news about RHVD2 (Rabbit Hemorrhagic Viral Disease) spreading in the United States. It is a very contagious and deadly disease caused by the calcivirus. It kills swiftly and with little warning. Until 2020, it was not known to affect the wild rabbit population in the...

Cottontails in our yard (as our dog looks on)

Was sitting outside near dusk tonight and watched as several cottontails hopped near our dog. They like to lounge near the chicken wire on right side of screen because there are potted plants that get watered from a drip line. It makes the ground cooler! (It was 107F today but has dropped to...

Video showing how to place oral syringe in cheek area

Thought this video might be helpful since there seems to be a common complaint that bunny spits out the medicine or critical care when fed in the mouth with an oral syringe. Inserting directly in the mouth risks choking. Placing it in the side of the mouth, in the cheek area, prevents bunny from...
