So both the cats are neutered and in good health. I have litter boxes everywhere for the rabbits. I use the horse bedding pine pellets from Tractor supply. The cats have left them alone up until about a month ago. They do their business in the rabbit boxes and I find that so not cool. They refused to go in theirs which i keep very clean. We've been using the corn litter for years now. I bought a new box and laid down fresh litter and hid the rabbit boxes from them. My old cat (10 years) decided to pee in dirty laundry piles, on any of my gear I leave out, my backpack any where but his litter box.

So my next step was to put rabbit litter in their box since they both seemed to like it. Voila old cat is now using litter box. Young cat doesn't care and will use it.

Now within the last week old cat is back to using whatever isn't the litter box for his peeing pleasures. He's been to the vet and is just fine. This is a cat who for ten years has used his litter box no matter how small, large, dirty, etc. If he was accidently locked out from his litter box he would go in the sink or the bath tub. NEVER anywhere he wasn't supposed too. I know it's him because I've caught him at it several times.

Any ideas? He's driving my hubby bonkers. I just kind of clean up after him. I've had him longer than anything else in this house to include the hubster. Which also drives hubby bonkers.

Have you tried a different litter? We had the same problem with our girl who did that and I put a layer of cedar (it's fine for cats) and a layer of unscented litter. She used it instantly! But males often, especially with other cats in the home, will suddenly not go in their box and no one has any idea how to fix it. My close family friend recently had to give up her kitty because of it:(

Cats are evil I swear. Lol. I am sorry you have to deal with that. My little old hospice cat is an outside cat so he doesn't get the opportunity to do bad things.

My kitten likes to use the rabbits litter boxes as well. Probably does not hurt that I use the same litter for both species (yesterdays news). Good luck with it. Is there any way that you can clean the cats box less often than you have been? Maybe if he knew that this was the spot to poop he would go there more? Worth a try at least.

Sometimes peeing outside of the litter box is a sign of urinary health problems but if he checked up fine then it is odd. did he have a bad experience? sometimes if they have a painful poop they will blame the litter box and not use it. Other than that the only environmental thing could be a change in routine yours or the cats. a new friend, a friend not around. did you do something to make kitty mad lol cats are quite mean. Does the pee look or smell abnormal? really dark or really yellow or does he seem to be in pain going pee?

Sass has a sludgy liver and has had some urinary issues including being super jaundice. I can usually tell when it's bad if she goes potty outside the box. if you suspect something is physically wrong have them do a urinalysis could be as simple as a UTI but if not then kitty may just be a mad kitty.

good luck give him extra kisses!!!

Also as an after thought look for there to be LOTS of pee. more than normal. that along with discoloration and/or pain are some signs of infection. Older cats tend to have those issues more. But you're vet may have already tested. They actually did a CBC (blood test) to figure out what was wrong with sass but a urinalysis will show more on that end. maybe just give them a call.
