All I can see in stores is pet's bedding - pressed paper, shavings, etc.
Do people use the same stuff for the litter boxes?
I had some boxes with pressed paper in the house, my rabbits pee in it pretty well. So, how is it supposed to be bedding if they use it as litter?
How do you use that stuff? Same thing in the litter box and in the cage?

Most of us that use a solid bottom cage don't use bedding in the cage. If you just put the litter in the litterbox and nothing on the cage bottom, and then put the box in the corner where they like to pee, they're pretty good at figuring it out. Some buns get fleece or towels as bedding, but other buns will pee or chew on those and so just get a solid cage bottom.

a lot of folks use wood pellets (from a feed store) or wood stove pellets (from a hardware store; make sure they don't say they have an accelerant added) as litter, since it's like $7 for 40 lbs... it's best not to use bedding in the cage at all, as rabbits actually seem to like lying on a hard surface and having soft fluffy stuff in the cage (outside the litter box) will confuse their potty habits.

hmmm, what about having hay in the closed part of the hutch? is this what people do? I can't imagine cage or hutch with hard surface only.

I just have coroplast floors in the condo and a tarp over the carpeting in the living room (which is fenced in with playpens for them). I've tried giving them fleece blankets and a cat bed, but they always choose to sleep on the hard stuff instead.

you can put a pile of hay in there if you want, just watch out for them peeing on it (mine always do if there's a pile somewhere)

Are your buns outside? If they are, then I would have hay in the closed part of the hutch.

For my big bun, she had a litter box with the pressed pine pellets as litter, plastic bottomed cage with a few blankets she could push around and lay on if she wanted. But most of the time she liked to lay on the plastic.
The baby stays in the litter box all the time, which is filled with hay, she eats and potties. But the bottom of the cage is covered in velvet blankets.
Most rabbits like to chew on towels, so fleece is better alternative if you're doing bedding.

My rabbit has a wood hutch with a linoleum floor. I cant put any kind of fabric in there because she eats it and pees on it...I just use shredded paper in her litter box. Thats what the rescue used that I got her from. So I kept with it. I change it everyday and she is fine with it

I like to have at least 2 flooring options in my cages so the buns can choose what they like to be on at any given time. Currently, I have tile for solid flooring on the main level and a padded mat on the upper level. They like the cold tile when they are warm.

I never use bedding loose in the cage. I use wood pellets for litter and put their hay right on top of the litter. (I've used Yesterdays News too, but the wood pellets are more cost effective) I used to change the litter box twice per week, but the last few weeks have been busy and I've gone a full week -- still no smell.

Here's a pic of how I set up their litter:

My litter of choice for the last three and a half years, since getting back into horses, has been Equine pellets used for horse bedding.I am very happy with it and use it everywhere, horses' stalls and bunnies' and cat litter boxes.

I use Cat Country litter - it works really well! Keep in mind that most cat litters are clumping or clay-based and CANNOT be used for rabbits, but Cat Country is totally safe and works great.

I use Kaytee but might be switching to Yesterdays News soon. Last time I cleaned Beautys litter box (after a week of not cleaning it) I decided to see how will the yesterdays news worked. I pratically put my nose in the box and could still not smell anything. It also dumps out for cleaning really easily.

I really need an advice. I got wood pellets, but I am in doubt to use them, as it says "Not for human or animal consumption"
Nothing about accelerant, so I presume it's not added.
Looks like this is high quality pellets (btw, less than 4 dollars for 40 lbs), but still, would someone please to check out the link? Thank you!!!

The only thing I would be concerned about is that it says they are made with hardwoods, but it does't specify which ones. I know that black walnut is toxic to animals, and it's a hardwood, so if it was in the pellets, it would be bad. I get wood pellets that specify they are made from conifers. If you can find wood pellets that are made from fir trees, or get the ones for horse bedding, that would be better. Even the pine shavings that are kiln dried, would be safer.

I thought the naturally occurring oils in woods were toxic for rabbits? Is it basically what's safe for horses is safe for buns too? I use Oxbow Ecco-straw its 100% edible after paying vet bills for everything else I worry about an impaction the cost is a non issue to me. Of course I have only one bun so I say that ;). The bedding smells sweet and fresh, I scoop his wet spots daily so there is no odor and it is extremely absorbent.

Thumperina - check online for either Terramigo, Guardian, ABM, or Woody Pet they are all "pelleted" horse bedding companies. You should be able to find one of them at a feed store or TSC you can expect to pay anywhere between $8 - $13 for 35lbs depending on the brand. ABM is the least expensive I have found it is on sale at times for $4 a bag. Even the "animal" brands say "Not for Human or Animal consumption" but I would worry about the types of wood in the pellet myself.
