Hi All,

I am new to this forum so apologies if this question has already been asked recently.

I am allergic to hay and need to find an alternative litter for my bunny. I do understand that hay is an essential part of a bunnies diet and will continue feed her hay, however, any one have suggestions of alternative types of litters? I heard that compressed saw dust pellets were great, however, I am finding it rather difficult toin sourcing this product...
Your suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Feed stores (like for horses) will have the wooden pellets you're looking for.

Alternatively, recycled news paper cat litters (like Purina's Yesterday's News or Daily Scoops) work very well and are what I use. :)

I know quite a few people inccluding myself use wood stove pellets. It can be found in home improvement stores. I find it quite affordable ($4 to a 40lb bag) and absorbant. Make sure it doesn't have accelerants, though Ive never seen ones that carry that myself.

I agree with the others. I buy pine pellets at the horse feed store.

I am also very allergic to hay. When I first adopted my bunnies, I had to wear goggles, gloves, and a surgical mask. lol!!! Then I switched to Orchard hay rather than Timothy hay. Now, I'm fine. Another type of hay I hear is good for allergies is Oat hay.

I use Kaytee Soft Granule Blend bedding http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000JLPIWU/?tag=skimlinks_replacement-20 for my rabbits and LOVE it. I tried the wood stove pellets but found that they did not help with the smell much, my rabbits did not like them AT ALL, and they take up a lot of room. 1 bag of the kaytee will easily last my 2 rabbits 1.5-2 months. I can EASILY go a week without cleaning the litter boxes and still not notice a smell. My rabbits refuse to use anything else now. It is light weight so it is easy to work with. I found that with the wood pellets I had to clean litter boxes at least 1x per day for them not to stink. The kaytee is much easier to use. I can use a cat litter scoop to get the poop out so the same amount will last even longer. I have ZERO complaints about using it.

I switched to the Tidy Breeze cat litter system with good results. I nixed their litter box because it was impossible to clean. Instead, I use a rubbermaid bin (not much bigger than a jumbo litter box) with a cat litter liner and the Tidy Breeze cat pad (it's like a puppy pad). I have had amazing results with both me and the buns sneezing as even the wood stove pellets were giving off dust. I use a florescent light diffuser--you can find a huge sheet for around $12 US at Home depot. I made a little "stand" so they aren't sitting in their poop and it falls right through.

Once a week, I take the used bag, throw it away, and fix up a new one. It takes minutes and there is no dust! One thing to be weary about is the liner--many members are concerned about their buns chewing it so you have to watch it. I obviously don't have that problem.

Good luck!

I agree with the rubber made tub thi ung. I have one that is ~24"x16" for my 2 girls. In there I put 1 scoop of Kaytee Soft Granule blend bedding and it lasts over a week. The only reason I clean the box is because the poop has built up so much that the girls are flinging it. It does not stink AT ALL. (I would know, the litter box is in their cage which is next to my bed. The litter box is even on the close side close to my pillow). I do not notice a smell from 2 rabbits even after 1 week.

I use shredded newspaper. Put yesterday's newspaper to use!

We always used Carefresh for Miss Hoppy - it is reclaimed wood pulp waste, no enviromentally friendly, easy to find - every pet supply store I went to carried it, has no oils like you get with pine, pretty absorbent - and compostable! That, with a layer of hay on top, Alfalfa when she was a baby, then Timothy once she was full grown, and she was a happy bunny.

I use feline pine which is a compressed wood pellet litter manufactured for cats. Here in the US there are also a number of wheat based cat litters that would probably work (As long as they're non-clumping.)

Definitely consider switching to other kinds of grass hay (e.g. orchard, oat, bermuda, etc.) if you can find one that you're not allergic to. All the grass hays have essentially the same nutritional value although some are apparently tastier than others. You may find one that your bun likes but that keeps you more comfortable.

Seb's litterbox is filled with Yesterday's News which is a paper based pelleted cat litter. Its safe for bunnies and I am honestly amazed at how well it works. A 15 lb bag lasts me about a month as I dump it completely once a week and my litterbox is very large. I put enough pellets in to completely cover the bottom by 1/2" to and inch of pelelts. It doesn't smell at the end of the week, I would know his pen and thus litterbox are right next to my bed lol, but at that point there are enough poops that he manages to fling a few out when he has a binky fit and is leaping in and out of his litterbox so I dump it and wipe down the litterbox with a few Nature's Miracle Small Pet Wipes. I've been extremely pleased with this litter and would heartily recommend it if you can locate some :)
