So, it is getting much colder outside.. and when I went out to check on my rabbits, feed water etc.. my youngest one had died! :( So, I gathered their stuff and moved them indoors. I dont have indoor cages, so I made some and am quite proud of myself! will be searching for some real ones these next couple days though..

How old was the youngest and did s/he seem off at all prior to you finding them?

Rabbits do MUCH better in the cold than they do in the heat, so I would not be blaming it on the cold just yet. There are several other factors that could come into play.

Now I'd be concerned about the rabbits you just moved indoors. Watch them closely because they will probably show signs of being really warm with such a drastic and fast temperature change. ;)

:rip: Binky free... who was your youngest? But good job on building indoor cages! How'd you do it?

He was only 10 weeks old. I am keeping an eye on them all. Our weather gets to -30 sometimes -40... and they are mini rex. I dont want to chance losing anymore whether it be to weather or something else. Being indoors will help me keep a better eye on them. Its cool in the basement and I left the window open so its not such a durastic (spelling?) weather change.

Haha..dont laugh at me!! I have an extra large dog crate (one of the wire ones) so I put my three bonded does together in there. I put my mini rex buck (11 weeks old) in another wire dog crate. Here is where it gets interesting.. I emptied the kids' toy box (it is quite a large one and turned it on its side so the top, bottom ad two 3 sides are covered, and the opening is against the large dog crate. In order to get into it I have to move the whole toy box, but it works. They still have an openig to breath and see out of against the other dog crate. I put a box in there as well so they have a hiding spot from the others. Then for my last buck, I used an old tv stand and put it against the wall. so the back, front, top and sides are covered. I put him in and then put the wire from my green house in front of it and put soe heavy items against the sides of it to hold the wire up so he cant escape.

If any happen to escape, they are in the spare room and wont get hurt. Tomorrow we go checking out cages etc.

So sorry about your bun passing :(

I'm a proponet of rabbits being inside with their families. They are social creatures and I think they thrive great inside.

A basement, with adequate light and ventilation, is an excellent place for them as the cooler temps down there will be just fine. No need to wory about them being too warm in a basement.

Alot of people choose NIC (neat idea cubes) to construct their cages. You can find lots of info on them here. They are much cheaper to build your own and you can make them spacious enough (most pet store cages are too small) for your buns.

Yeah, it is quite cool down there.. I opened a window just to make it not such a big change in temp. We spent lots of time outside with the bunnies during the summer.. but now that it is winter it is best they are inside anyways.. they will like it inside they have lots of room to run around and lots of light and ventalation. And.. I get to still be with them lots. They may get sick of me haha

This is kind of off-topic. You seemed to have gotten a lot of new buns! Can you do a blog with pics/descriptions? I never knew you had a Lionlop!

Of course I can!! I will start one in a few minutes. Just gotta get kids bathes and to bed. I just kept wanting one more bunny lol. Now I have all I want....for now

Here in the states you can get them at office supply stores or targets or kmarts, places like that.

I'm so sorry for your loss!

I don't know about where to buy NIC grids in Canada, but I know we have canadian members with NIC cages so I'd recommend starting a thread in the housing and environment section asking where you can find them. NIC cages are the BEST!

I agree with building some NIC cages. They are MUCH cheeper than buying cages at a store. They are bigger. They are easy and fun to build. You could make a whole series of them.
